Headword 1 | 形づくる |
Headword 2 | 形作る |
Headword 3 | 形造る |
Reading 1 | かたちづくる |
Part-of-speech | v5r,vi |
English 1 | to form |
English 2 | to shape |
English 3 | to make |
English 4 | to mold |
English 5 | to mould |
English 6 | to build up |
Comment | My Kanji reading-writing ability having been well established, please take the following with a huge grain of salt. I find zero-few hits on the 形づくる and 形造る headwords, with most being for 形作る. I can't help but think this finding makes more sense (形作る should be the P or primary rendering), because 形作る is simply easier and faster to visually process, and leaves no ambiguity. |

Editorial Comment | 形作る is far more common, leading 4:1 in WWW hits. I'll move it in front and demote 形づくる. |

Current Entry | 外面 [がいめん(P);そとづら] /(n) exterior/surface/outward appearance/(P)/ |
Headword 1 | 外面 |
Reading 1 | がいめん |
Reading 2 | そとづら |
Part-of-speech | n |
English 1 | exterior |
English 2 | surface |
English 3 | outward appearance |
Comment | I think the rendering of "outward appearance" result from a confusion/melding with 外見 【がいけん(P); そとみ】 (n) outward appearance. Actually all three renderings require some serious cognitive gymnastics to comprehend such a simple word. How about: "exterior surface; outside face; exterior; outward; outside" - a nice admixture of nouns and adjectives; Sorry, but it hits a bit more on the core meaning and extensive usage. |

Editorial Comment | I don't think it's confusion. Several refs, including GG5, have "outward appearance". |
Current Entry | 五辺形 [ごへんけい] /(n) pentagon/ |
Headword 1 | 五辺形 |
Reading 1 | ごへんけい |
Part-of-speech | n |

Comment | Where in the world did this entry come from? Isn't X角形 a whole lot more convenient (where X = 3 --> infinity)? Example: 2角形, 3角形, .... 10角形 |

Current Entry | 長四角 [ながしかく] /(n) rectangle/ |
Headword 1 | 長四角 |
Reading 1 | ながしかく |
Part-of-speech | n |
English 1 | rectangle |
Comment | I find that this entry is not found in Eijiro, Google or Yahoo online dictionaries - Zero Hits. What can be found everywhere and what deservedly has an Edict P marker is 長方形. |
Name | Dennis |
Submission Type | amend |
Editorial Comment | 長四角 is in GG5, Koujien & Daijirin. At ~14k Google hits it is clearly not common, but not rare enough for an "obsc" marker. |
Current Entry | 正角定木 [せいかくじょうぎ] /(n) try square/ |
Headword 1 | 正角定木 |
Reading 1 | せいかくじょうぎ |
Part-of-speech | n |
English 1 | try square |
Comment | Not knowing what a "try square" is (but one can guess), I looked it up in Merriam-Webster. The definition given is qualified as "circa 1877" - well before my time (and even Jim's). Perhaps "carpenter's square" would be a bit less dated and certainly more clear. |
