Comment | Back in May last year
http://www.csse.monash.edu.au/~jwb/dicsubs/2007-05/subs2007-05-07.html Rene wrote. if one wants to keep "head (of a coin)", it will have to be changed, as there are no heads on japanese coins. perhaps: obverse side (i.e., "heads") of a coin and for 裏: reverse side (i.e., "tails") of a coin **** Well I do want to keep "heads" (or equivalent), although I didn't spot this entry till now. I don't think there is any great problem with using 'heads (on a coin)' regardless of what is actually stamped on coins. It isn't as if there are actually tails stamped on the reverse sides anyway. No, the question I have is where 'heads' (or 'obverse' if you insist) should go - in with (2) or a separate entry? |

Comment | there's a problem here i was trying to wrestle with in this entry
表, as i understand it, has two meanings that conflict with each other. for example, if you have a playing card face-down on the table, 表 can refer to either the *face* of the card (that being the 'main' side) or the *back* of the card (that being the side that is visible at the moment) so i was trying to work both of those in. "front (of a building)" was referring to things that have an actual 'main side', and "face" was used to refer to the visible side it might just be easier to say the hell with it and lump the first two senses together. as it stands now, it basically matches up with what progressive and new century have if you want to add "heads" or "obverse" just put it in the first sense (somewhere before "surface"). |

(4) inside and I think it could do with a separate sense for something like 'out of sight, behind the scenes, hidden (truth, etc.), secret, underground'. The 'heads' side on a coin is always 'heads' whether it is face up or face down, so that would be 'inherent'. There's nothing wrong with that as an idea - but "surface" doesn't really make any of that clear. My personal assumption would be that when something has a well established inherent front/back then that overrides any positional, temporary, front/back. |
