New Entries/Amendments for 2008-02-12

These are the submissions received via the WWW forms for this day. I (Jim Breen) will annotate the submission if I think it needs to be amended or rejected or if I have a question about it. Otherwise it can be assumed that it has been accepted. You can see how it will look in EDICT by looking at the "diffs" file for this day or the next in the diffs directory.
Annotations completed: 12 Feb.
Current Entry兄 [にい] /(n) (See 兄さん) (col) elder brother/ (2254970)
Headword 1
Reading 1にい
Part-of-speechn
English 1(See 兄さん) (col) elder brother
CommentI guess this was the result of 'separating' にい from けい, but, bluntly, I think it's a mess.

For one thing I'm not sure 兄(にい) is ever used on its own to mean 'elder brother'. It might, but if so I've never heard it so used.

I also think this is (fam) not just (col).

I suggest that, unless some good reasons can be come up with to do otherwise, you revert to something based on the entry we had before it was messed about with.

兄 [にい] /(n-suf) (1) (fam) used after the name of someone who is an older brother figure/(n) (2) (See お兄さん) used with various honorifics to mean (older) brother/

An equivalent entry could be made for 姉[ねえ]

姉 [ねえ] /(n-suf) (1) (fam) used after the name of someone who is an older sister figure/(n) (2) (See お姉さん) used with various honorifics to mean (older) sister/

I won't submit it until the decision has been made on this entry.

Editorial Comment I'll revert to the earlier version. It overlaps an awaful lot with 兄/けい, but it's probably too messy to combine them.

Commenti think this entry should just be for 視 (the way all dictionaries have it, exemplified by the x-refs for the current entry) but i'm not sure i can think of good noun-ish glosses
NameRene Malenfant

Editorial Comment GG5 has an entry for -視する, and I think it works OK. The Kodansha GJD has a 視する entry too (and only has a 漢和 entry for the kanji alone). GG5 has a lot of entries where 視 is an affix meaning "visual" or "vision". I can't fins it being used solo. Pro tem I'll make a pref/suf entry.

Commentmerge with:
函れる 【いれる】 (v1) to put into [V][G][GI][S][A]

i'm rather sure this should be marked (iK). pretty rare, and even my kanwa jiten doesn't have this reading.

partial merge with:
容れる; 淹れる 【いれる】 (v1,vt) (1) to put something in (e.g. into a container); (2) to let somebody in (e.g. into a room) [V][Ex][G][GI][S][A] [G][GI][S][A]

i suggest 淹れる be left as an entry by itself, simply meaning "to make (tea, coffee, etc.)", so it doesn't have to be entered here (saving the hassle of placing all the restrictions

this might also be included as part of the merge with a usage note:
挿れる 【いれる】 (v1,vt) (from 挿入 and 入れる) (vulg) to insert (usu. as part of sexual intercourse) [V][G][GI][S][A]

2) Judging from the hits on Google there seems to be a large number of restaurants in Japan with the name 土味, thus one needs to narrow the search by using two keywords: 土味 and 焼き物 if one wants to get relevant pages quickly.
