Part-of-speech | n,vs |
English 1 | torture |
English 2 | distortion |
English 3 | falsification |
English 4 | perversion |
Comment | This is just my personal feeling but I've never come across this word meaning "torture". Also, goo.ne.jp's dictionary says about it: 故意にゆがめること。ことさら事実をいつわって伝えること。多くは悪く変えることにいう。
Nothing about torture. It's "to distort (the truth) with malice", so "distortion" and "falsification" are OK in my opinion, and "perversion" is acceptable if you take it as "perversion of the truth". But torture doesn't really come into it. I suggest removing torture altogether, or if that is not OK then at least moving it into the last slot of the 4 English entries. (N.B. the far more common word for torture is 拷問, which is already in the dictionary.) |

Could do. I suspect it's closer to (3) than the other ones. It sounds quite similar to the sound a native speaker made when I explained what black pudding is made from and how to make fried bread properly. Try that with a Japanese friend for comparison purposes ;-). Maybe hold of on that decision for a while in case you get any feedback and I'll keep an ear open for usage. |

2. うっとりとさせる is also possible (about 1/3 the hits of うっとりさせる). 3. うっとりさせる is just a variation on the (vs) of うっとり, and has much less hits than (for example) うっとりした. Considering that any (vs) tagged entry is going to have a 〜させる form does it need to have a separate entry? |
Name | Paul Blay |
Submission Type | amend |
Editorial Comment |
I sort-of agree about うっとりさせる being subsumed into the うっとり entry. For me
the problem is the うっとり entry itself, about which you have posted.
According to GG5, うっとりする and うっとりとする mean the same, which rather
gets in the way of dividing うっとり up into (ad,adv-to) and (vs). I'm inclined
to keep うっとり just as (adv,adv-to) and add:
うっとりする;うっとりとする /(exp) (1) to be entranced/to be enraptured/to be transported/to be fascinated/(2) to be absentminded/to be miles away/to be in a world of one's own/ I can't see this fitting the "vs" model cleanly. Otherwise practically every adverb would need a "vs" since it may collect a する. |
