New Entries/Amendments for 2008-03-02

These are the submissions received via the WWW forms for this day. I (Jim Breen) will annotate the submission if I think it needs to be amended or rejected or if I have a question about it. Otherwise it can be assumed that it has been accepted. You can see how it will look in EDICT by looking at the "diffs" file for this day or the next in the diffs directory.

Editorial Comment GG5 has two examples which I think show this:

CommentAmendment:

Combining the entry
月灯かり; 月明かり 【つきあかり】 (n) moonlight

with the entry
月明り 【つきあかり】 (n) moonlight

When you look up "tsukiakari/つきあかり" you get two entries. The second entry appears to just be an alternative writing for the first entry, so there's no point for them to be separate (esp. since the first entry has example sentences and the second doesn't).

English 1(See 押さえる) to restrain
English 2to curb
English 3to suppress
English 4to control
English 5to arrest
English 6to keep down (e.g. information)
CommentFreely admitting that I might be predictably obtuse here, I must say that I am confused as to which warrants a P marker: the above or 押さえる(P); 押える 【おさえる】 (v1,vt) (1) (See 抑える) to pin something down; to hold something down; to stop; to restrain; (2) to seize; to grasp; (3) to gain control of something; (P) [V][Ex][G][GI][S][A] [G][GI][S][A]
Both are so close in meaning that a usage key might be helpful and the example sentences are extremely similar for both. Are they interchangeable then?
NameDennis
Submission Typeamend
Editorial Comment 広辞宛 and 大辞林 have them in the same entry. GG5 splits them, but the Kenkyusha 中辞典 comines them. The two sets of senses in GG5 pretty much match what is here. 押さえる seems to be rather more "physical"? Any views from others?

CommentSorry to choose such an unfortunate example but I learned eons ago that one must always put な (as an -al ending, for example, in English) after ...的. I still do but I also see it to be hit-and-miss with most dictionaries. I know Edict is not intended to "teach" grammar, but 性的衝動 is doing so as a grammar example. Any hard and fast rule here?
NameDennis

Editorial Comment I think the use of ...的 as a plain prenominal is very common. In this case 性的衝動 is in many dictionaries and on WWW hits outnumbers 性的な衝動 by about 3:1.

japanese dictionaries even give examples of its use in this way. i.e., daijisen:
