Current Entry抑える [おさえる] /(v1,vt) (See 押さえる) to restrain/to curb/to suppress/to control/to arrest/to keep down (e.g. information)/(P)/ (1547260)
Headword 1抑える
Reading 1おさえる
Part-of-speechv1,vt
English 1(See 押さえる) to restrain
English 2to curb
English 3to suppress
English 4to control
English 5to arrest
English 6to keep down (e.g. information)
Comment> The two sets of senses in GG5 pretty much match what is here.
> 押さえる seems to be rather more "physical"? Any views from
> others?

The 抑える indexed examples are practically all 'with kanji'. The only obviously physical example is ...

このはしごをしっかりと抑えておいて下さい。
Please hold this ladder steady.

Looking at google hits for はしごを抑えて / はしごを押さえて 押さえて is certainly more common, but not a vast difference.

I would suggest a merge with (usu. 抑える) on appropriate senses.

Current Entry何度か [なんどか] /(n) many times/ (1189180)
Headword 1何度か
Reading 1なんどか
Part-of-speechn
English 1many times
English 2several times
ReferenceIn the examples from wwwjdic page, 何度か is usually translated as "several times".
#ID=6364, #ID=68257, #ID=81518 and many others.
Also googling for "何度か" "several times" seems to confirm this.
CommentThere are many translations of 何度か as "several times". "several times" is not exactly the same as "many times", so there should be another english meaning entry for the 何度か to indicate another possible usage. BTW, 何度か does not have [Ex] link, although many examples containing it exist (I've downloaded the file with examples and do grep on it).

CommentI'm a little bit dubious about the idea of this entry as an (adv). Would 縦に be an adv?

It seems closer to a direction, if you say 北に行く you wouldn't generally have 北に as "北に [きたに] (adv) northly" and interpret it as "go northly".

Editorial Comment Well, all the English glosses are marked "adv" in the OED. I can't think of using 横に in a non-adverbial way. (I've sent you a sentence for 横に.)
