New Entries/Amendments for 2008-03-15

These are the submissions received via the WWW forms for this day. I (Jim Breen) will annotate the submission if I think it needs to be amended or rejected or if I have a question about it. Otherwise it can be assumed that it has been accepted. You can see how it will look in EDICT by looking at the "diffs" file for this day or the next in the diffs directory.
Annotations completed: 17 March.

CommentGG5, 中辞典, 広辞宛 4th & 6th edn all use 柿 for the first kanji. The font used by Firefox on this system has identical glyphs; omitting the break in the RH vertical stroke in 柿. I'll mark them iK, but I think they are effectively itaiji now.

CommentStill a bit confused, as there is no 椋[むく] entry. GG5 has one which simple points to 椋木 and 椋鳥.
==

Ah. I believe I was suggesting that 椋(むく) be given its own entry apart from this one. But, if you decided to "merge" these two entries (this one and the one for 椋(むく) that does not yet exist, I mean), then you should do that by adding the reading "むく" here, restricting it to 椋 only, and removing the iK.

Editorial Comment OK, I'll put 椋(むく) here.

Comment"OK. 3 & 4 to the top. Sense change. "

I have no problem putting the most common senses at the top, but if they aren't the original meanings (and the "more common senses" are clearly figurative usages), perhaps a note could be included. for example, daijirin has this note for 天の邪鬼:

CommentI am legitimately confused. Wben I source this very common expression via the P demarcated d目眩 (which I know via conversation, though I don't read and write well), I find めくるめく meaning "dazzling". With Eijiro (ALC) I am redirected to 目まい for which bountiful examples of the "vertigo/dizzy" meaning exist. Yahoo and Google produce nothing for the 目まい entry. Please help the functionally illiterate of us.

Submission Typeamend
Editorial Comment I understand the confusion. 目眩 and 目眩く(めくるめく) are different words which happen to share the same first two kanji. Eijiro has examples for both 目まい and 目眩 (and even 眩暈). The situation with the writing of めまい is a mess, but that's Japanese orthography for you.

Comment>...wouldn't 言出す be an (io) ?

I think it falls under the "it can't be confused with anything else" category, so it's okay.

Daijirin and Daijisen seem to be pretty good about including all of the "correct" okurigana forms.

This one is:
いいだ・す[いひ―] 3 【言(い)出す】

So it should be okay.
