CommentThe thing is that I tried to get them merged completely, but failed to convince Jim. I didn't want "also written as" if possible because they don't work for dictionary look-ups.

~~

Yeah, but I think the particle is so rarely written with kanji that it can be written off if these aren't going to be merged. Daijirin doesn't bother with it, nor do any of the waeis I checked (except New Century, which has a totally combined entry).

Plus, with the "degree, extent, amount" sense and the x-ref to ぐらい (IMO, more appropriate than the x-ref to どのくらい) it should be enough for people to piece it together if they actually come across it as kanji.

Commentif there are going to be 為に and の為に entries to sweep up the "to/in order to/because of/as a result of" kind of stuff, i'm not sure there's a reason to keep things that aren't nouns in here.

senses need to be split at any rate, although you might be able to merge the first two, and the 4th seems like an effort to force the meaning into a noun

there's only one example sentence linking to either sense 4 or 5, so it shouldn't be too much of a hassle for paul to switch the order of those two. i would imagine it would be much better still to move it up even higher on the list (i.e., to at least second place, if not first)

Then I say go for a full merge. Re-adding senses that are redundant across entries that also have identical kanji and identical readings doesn't just violate the "two out of three rule", it violates the "three out of three rule".

==

If I have to put up with things like 乃 and 為る I don't
see why くらい should be singled out to have its kanji representation obscured.

==

I'm not sure that you should have to "put up with" 乃. It qualifies as 漢文, and that's one area that edict proper probably shouldn't be getting into, even though it's not very difficult to scrounge up examples for lots of the stuff.

No non-kanwa dictionary of any kind bothers with 乃, even as an "also written as".

I would say the entry for の could quite easily be done up as kana only with "also written as 乃,之". There are entries for both of them in kanjidic, which is where the kanbun stuff is better handled anyway.

Editorial Comment I've looked back over the last 14 months discussion on the くらい/ぐらい/位 issue, and I think it really should be one entry. I also think ぐらい should be there as a headword/reading (not just "also ぐらい") so people can look it up. Maybe "ぐらい /(suf,prt) (see 位・くらい) ....".
