English 1 | (1) to grow |

Comment | This is something else that will have to be dealt with at some time.
This entry is archaic. All dictionaries have it as 生ふ, with the reading as おう. And it's a v2h-k form (or whatever you want to call kaminidan verbs), not a v5u form. お・う【生ふ】オフ #自上二# (オホ(大)を活用させた語。植物などが大きく育つ意)はえのびる。生長する。古事記下「いくみ竹―・ひ」 in addition, it doesn't seem to have the second sense. |

頚巻き 31 Google hits, mostly from Edict. In fact there are only two that don't come from Edict (one of which I'm suspicious might actually be from Edict in the first place). One dictionary portal site suggests that 頚巻き is the same word as 首巻き http://dic.jlogos.com/jap/list_shead.html?uid=NULLGWDOCOMO&lhed=く&shead=&serch_next=460&jid=jap (but I can't check properly without the right mobile phone mail address) One Japanese/French dictionary supports 'carotid' http://www.dictionaric.com/dico japon 1.htm On the whole I would tend to remove this entry, unless you have a good reference. |

Comment | Paul Blay was kind enough to check on this for me, the result not being decisive, only conjecture. At any rate there needs to be some "joining" or rationalization of the following - and hopefully - a decision as to which writing now predominates:
頸椎 【けいつい】 (n) cervical vertebrae 頚椎 【けいつい】 (n) cervical vertebra(e); cervical spine You will note that 頸 and 頚 differ, Paul's conclusion and I tend to agree being that 頸 "might" be a newer form. Any thoughts? |

Editorial Comment | They are itaiji, and have both been around for a long time. Neither are 常用漢字. The JSC committee chose 頚 for the "level 1 JIS kanji" list, probably because it is simpler. 頸 was pushed down to "level 2". Major dictionaries seem to have stuck with 頸. |
