Headword 1警策
Reading 1けいさく
Reading 2きょうさく
Part-of-speechn
English 1warning stick (Rinzai Zen)
English 2encouragement stick (Soto Zen)
Referencehttp://jiten.biglobe.ne.jp/j/d0/36/cc/8de24a298705a06125129e40806d74bd.htm
警策は、警覚策励(けいかくさくれい)の略。坐禅のとき、雲水(参禅者)の肩および背中に打ち下ろされる棒を指す。曹洞宗では「きょうさく」、臨済宗では「けいさく」と読む。
CommentI'm not sure how to indicate that whether it is a "warning stick" or an "encouragement stick," the purpose and use are the same, although in Soto the stick is used at the request of the meditator, while in Rinzai it can be requested but also administered at the discretion of the jikijitsu.

Current Entry歴史上 [れきしじょう] /(adj-no,adv) (1) historic/(2) historical/ (1558130)
Headword 1歴史上
Reading 1れきしじょう
Part-of-speechadj-no,adv
English 1(1) historic
English 2(2) historical
Comment> In English there is a clear difference.
> Consider "historical society" and "historic society".

As far as I can tell that clear distinction between 'historical' and 'historic' applies to just one sense of those English words - A sense that doesn't apply to the Japanese 歴史上.
e.g. "This is a historic moment." ○
"This is a historical moment." △
That meaning would (IMO) be 歴史的 not 歴史上の.

When it comes to things like "historic interest"
/ "historical interest" the words are interchangeable. Thus I would need a clear division of meaning between the two senses _and_ evidence that both meanings are represented with 歴史上.
NamePaul Blay
Submission Typeamend
Editorial Comment Well, Kenkyusha Readers' glosses both historic and historical as 歴史上の. I agree it's a fine point, and I won't lose sleep over having them in the one sense.

CommentI think that makes the difference between the senses clearer.

Both are often used in compound words without a な, so maybe an (adj-pn) or (pref) might also be appropriate.

Editorial Comment Both の and な "adjectives" often drop the の/な in compounds. I think an "adj-pn" is practically implied.
