Current Entry自然食品 [しぜんしょくひん] /(n) natural foods/ (1726700)
Headword 1自然食品
Reading 1しぜんしょくひん
Part-of-speechn
English 1natural foods
CommentSince I have completely, absolutely no idea what "natural food" is, I can only guess we are referring to "organic foods; "organic foodstuffs" - possibly food without additives or preservatives. Please do not be offended; for it is quite often that I see an English rendering which is no more than a "choku-yaku" and makes little or no sense.
NameDennis
Submission Typeamend
Editorial Comment I guess the people who wrote the 3.5M WWW pages containing the phrase "natural foods" had a vague idea what they meant. And I also suspect they didn't know they were 直訳ing some Japanese. GG5 et al. have it as "natural foods" too, but they wouldn't know. Nevertheless, adding "organic food" would not go amiss.

Current Entry直下型地震 [ちょっかがたじしん] /(n) earthquake which hits directly above its epicenter (epicentre)/ (1788170)
Headword 1直下型地震
Reading 1ちょっかがたじしん
Part-of-speechn
English 1near-field earthquake (local earthquake, esp. with a shallow focus directly under a populated area)
Referencejekai

Some Japanese-English dictionaries translate 直下型地震 as, for example, "an earthquake directly above its epicenter" or "epicentral earthquake," but these are incorrect (meaningless, in fact): an "epicenter" is the area on the surface of the ground directly above an earthquake's focus, the point on a fault face where the earthquake motion begins. The Japanese word 直下型地震 concentrates on the fact that such an earthquake's focus is directly beneath a specific area, usually an urbanized one. This is of interest to the Japanese because of the frequency of such earthquakes in Japan and their attendant consequences.

The technical English term for 直下型地震 is "near-field earthquake", though in most contexts referring to 直下型地震 as "direct hit earthquakes" should be adequate and readily understood by most readers. English texts often discuss "local earthquakes with a shallow focus" in these contexts.
