Current Entry | 普通 [ふつう] /(adj-no) (1) general/ordinary/usual/(2) train that stops at every station/(P)/ (1497190) |
Headword 1 | 普通 |
Reading 1 | ふつう |
Part-of-speech | adj-no |
English 1 | (1) general |
English 2 | ordinary |
English 3 | usual |
English 4 | (2) train that stops at every station |
Comment | Now on this I cannot be challenged as I have more hours sitting inside Japanese trains than some of you folks have been alive. If you use 普通 to mean "train that stops at every station" and don't qualify it - in conversation, you had better have some serious context to go with it. "kaku-tei-sha" is about as elliptical as I would like to be in conversation, if I did not say "futsuu ressha or futsuu densha" neither of which I would say actually as I seriously dislike ambiguity and confusion. What is written on the front of the train would, however, suffice as context and then 普通 would make sense. |

Editorial Comment | I have made it clearer that 普通 in sense 2 is an abbreviation of 普通列車. |

Adapted from the bilingual foreword to the book: 逃げ水へ戦後の父を追いつめる nigemizu e sengo no chichi wo oitsumeru toward the mirage of water the postwar fathers chasing after … |
Comment | Oitsumeru may have more of a connotation of being "chased into a corner and then trapped" than just chasing after. But I'm not sure. |
