Current Entry退職金 [たいしょくきん] /(n) retirement allowance/ (1661130)
Headword 1退職金
Reading 1たいしょくきん
Part-of-speechn
English 1retirement allowance
Comment"retirement allowance" really doesn't say anything meaningful. What 退職金 really is is a form of "severance pay" paid by an employer unpon retirement, usually in a lump-sum. From that money the individual is expected to live the rest of his life. So in lieu of "retirement allowance", I might suggest the simpler chokuyaku of "retirement money" with a parenthetical explanation as per the above.

Editorial Comment I agree that "retirement allowance" is not meaningful, and I have rewritten the glosses. I see most of the JEs have "retirement allowance", and it's in the "official" translations of organization such as the 建設業・清酒製造業・林業退職金共済組合.

Sorry for this addendum: A link to 年金 (pension) might also be in order.

Editorial Comment Maybe "air pirate/air piracy" is better. A ref or two would help.

Editorial Comment Most of the Eijiro matches are something else. There's "いい訳する余地はない。" which looks odd. I suspect the real verb these days is 訳す.

Headword 1大の字

English 1(1) shape of the "dai" kanji (esp. person with arms and legs outstretched)
English 2(adv) (2) sprawled
English 3spread-eagled
Comment> 大の字に寝る
> ベッドの上で大の字になった

Possibly decent support for the adverbial nature of 大の字*に*.

If you consider, for example, 仰向け it doesn't become an (adv) just because there are lots of hits for 仰向けに寝る.
NamePaul Blay
Submission Typeamend
Editorial Comment True, but the meaning of 仰向けに is clear from 仰向け itself, unlike 大の字に. Anyway, I think you are right - an entry for 大の字に is better.

CommentALC has "wake-up call" and "heads-up" but I'm not sure about those two.
Submission Typenew
Editorial Comment "heads-up" is 米語, but OK. I've also added "call for attention/alert". It's vs and adj-f too. Good entry in the KOD追加語彙.
