New Entries/Amendments for 2008-05-01

These are the submissions received via the WWW forms for this day. I (Jim Breen) will annotate the submission if I think it needs to be amended or rejected or if I have a question about it. Otherwise it can be assumed that it has been accepted. You can see how it will look in EDICT by looking at the "diffs" file for this day or the next in the diffs directory.
Annotations completed: 1 May.
Current Entry溜める [ためる] /(v1,vt) (1) to amass/to accumulate/to store/(2) to leave unpaid/(P)/ (1552630)
Headword 1溜める
Reading 1ためる
Part-of-speechv1,vt
English 1(1) to amass
English 2to accumulate
English 3to store
English 4(2) to leave unpaid
CommentFor what it's worth, Eijiro has 溜める and 溜まる in kana only (I have found many others as well). Again, for what it's worth, when I was last in Japan I noticed a real "dumbing down" of the language, especially amongst the young people and especially compared to what I experienced in the 70's. Also, Paul Blay has noticed a trend towards kana and away from kanji. I dunno if that helps you though.

Editorial Comment With several different verbs pronounced たまる and ためる, the practice seems to be to write one of them in kana. According to GG5, the たまる one is 堪まる, and it doesn't say for ためる. The 中辞典 uses kana for both 堪る and 溜まる, and for ためる both 溜める and 貯める. I wish there were good metrics on this. Eijiro can't be taken as a guide, really.

CommentThis is a correction of the word "maldistribution", which seems rare to me & meaning is "unevenly distributed".

ALC has a couple more meanings.

P.S. I had to resubmit this because of a space character after "偏在" - may be worth fixing since your system just drops the entry & some people might not bother to go back.

Editorial Comment I'm amending the submission system to ignore spaces in the kanji and reading fields.
