Editorial Comment | I don't think だって means "because". The context is missing, but in that sentence I'd translate it as "however". |
Headword 1 | 読み解く |

Part-of-speech | v5m |
Part-of-speech | v5k |
English 1 | reading and explaining |
Comment | その 「読み解く」 と言う姿勢を...
That is the expression as seen in the context of the text which I was reading, but I cannot find the expression in any reference source up to this time. 読解 [どくかい] is given in Nelson as 'reading and explaining a book'. Further to earlier comments about my submissions, I am still a little confused because, as I see it, if I know the meaning already of an expression, or if I find the meaning in a reliable reference book which I have to hand, I do not need to refer to your site for help. If I cannot find a meaning and I refer to your site, I often face the observation 'make a submission' and then I feel that I should do so in order to help with the development of the information available. However, when I read the advice about making a submission, it seems that I am unlikely to be qualified to do so. Hence, to me these two things are incompatible. I can understand that the site may not contain a meaning for an expression and that I should then look for help elsewhere. However, for you to ask for a submission from a person, in accordance with the advice given, such a person needs to know Japanse quite well; and, yet, such a person would never discover that you needed a submission in the first place, .e., because that person would not search your site for a meaning which is already known. Save, of course, as chance encounter with an oddity. Anyway, I am please to say that in many cases I have found your site automatically gives a meaning to many of my searches and that is very helpful for someone who simply studies on his own. Sorry to take up your time on this point, but I have done so in order to save wasting your time in the future should you prefer that I do not make such submissions again. |

Feel free to make a tentative suggestion, but say so in the comments. We're
just trying to dissuade people from making wild guesses. For 読み解く
I have amended it thus:
- POS is v5k (not v5m, as it doesn't end in む.) - as it's a verb, the English should be in the infinitive "to ....". - I have made it: "to read and understand/to subject to close analysis/t o decipher/to decode". That's based on a couple of dictionaries. |
Current Entry | 譲渡 [じょうと] /(n,vs) transfer/assignment/conveyance/(P)/ (1357040) |
Headword 1 | 譲渡 |
Reading 1 | じょうと |
Part-of-speech | n,vs |
English 1 | transfer |
English 2 | assignment |
English 3 | conveyance |
Comment | I'm curious as to why only this entry has a V (suru conjugation). If I were a newbie, I would be led to believe the 譲渡 compounds that follow are different, when in fact you can in Japanese put suru with about anything and make a verb on the spot. |

Editorial Comment | (Since Dennis says he doesn't read these comments, I don't know how far to respond.) There are about 11,000 "vs" tags in JMdict. Perhaps you mean that 譲渡所得, 譲渡性預金 and 譲渡担保 should be "vs" also? If so, please put in an amendment, but back it up. I do not really agree that "in Japanese put suru with about anyth ing and make a verb on the spot". |
Current Entry | 千円 [せんえん] /(n) 1000 yen/ (1388780) |
Headword 1 | 千円 |
Reading 1 | せんえん |

English 1 | 1000 yen |
Comment | Now just when I thought I had completly lost my mind about those old P markers and how they are not truly "high-frequency" words, but many being somewhat arcane, I run across this entry. Neither it nor 千円札 appears to be of very high frequency. Pardon the sarcasm. We might wish a separate D marker for daily usage vocab. Just a suggestion.
By the way, our pages are "littered" at best with too much information that is hard to separate (more so now than ever). How about some color-coding of P words, D words, etc. and then ditch the flags? |

Editorial Comment | I won't repeat the criteria for "P" markers. As it happens 千円 doesn't make the WWW hit criterion, 千円札 just scrapes in and 1000円 gets there comfortably. Quite frankly I don't know what purpose is really served by tagging numeric quantities as "common". |

It's certainly used here, and the meaning's clear. (search for 交際中) |
Comment | Perhaps this is stretching the definition of a dictionary, but certainly “彼らは交際中だ” seems usable enough to me. |

Editorial Comment | 中 is one of those 付属語 that can be attached to almost anything. I think 交際中i worth having and it's reasonably common. |
