Comment> There are other 形容動詞 entries with a later "adv" sense.

There are 234 形容動詞 entries that are also used as an adv. However I think they may all be used as an (adv) /without/ having a に used. They are mostly (on-mim) entries. かちかち, かつかつ, からから, ... (with maybe a couple of dozen exceptions). I checked the first 100 or so.

Comment> I still have a problem with バットを長めに持つ.
> It doesn't mean you hold it longly or longishly.

Actually it means you "hold it somewhat long" ('long' also being an adv in English). I don't see a problem in holding bats long or short or cutting beans long or short.

> The entry should give some indication that supports a
> reasonable translation.

Or an x-ref to a related entry that does.

Editorial Comment If I saw that someone "held a bat long" I'd think they held it for a long time; not that they held it by the long part. What do we do? Have an entry for 長めに and xref?

English 5(5) roof
Comment> Paul suggested it as an xref in the first place.

Yup. I will point out that it's a common word (generally in fiction) and avoids being confused with (1). A パン屋 might be a person or a shop, but I don't think there are many shops where you can get freshly made 殺し (I hope not, anyway).
