New Entries/Amendments for 2008-05-31

These are the submissions received via the WWW forms for this day. I (Jim Breen) will annotate the submission if I think it needs to be amended or rejected or if I have a question about it. Otherwise it can be assumed that it has been accepted. You can see how it will look in EDICT by looking at the "diffs" file for this day or the next in the diffs directory.

Commentfinished the walk a week ahead of schedule so i'm back in osaka for a spell

国民宿舎 have nothing to do with "youth", (although i guess "youth hostels" aren't really limited to young people either) but since my shikoku guidebook tells me they often tend to be *more* expensive than minshuku/ryokan, etc. this entry should probably be reworded

CommentPlease don't trust me on this one - but we may wish to reverse the kanji readings, since as we can all notice, the
敵 crops up in all the compounds. In addition, Yahoo, Google and Eijiro all find it in lots of words. Though they list both kanji, Eijiro has a really bizarre take on 仇. See: http://eow.alc.co.jp/篁/UTF-8/

Commentooh, nifty. i see example sentences now pop up in tiny characters when you do a search. very nice.

note to paul, the example sentence for this word is linked to both readings for this character. this is probably the safer reading

i'm not sure if it's worth including, but 有 is often seen as an abbreviation for 有限会社 parenthesized after a company's name, like "Ltd." in english. the same goes for (株) = 株式会社

Commentalso appears to include carvings, according to daijirin/daijisen. "image" may be better than "picture"

"respectful term for" can probably be collapsed to "(hon)" or "(pol)"

御影 is also read as みえい (the normal reading in buddhism, at least on the pilgrimage) reading ぎょえい seems restricted to high royalty and might be given its own entry or a note

Headword 1通字
Reading 1つうじ
Part-of-speechn
English 1A distinctive character used in the names of all people belonging to a single clan or lineage.
ReferenceJapanese Wikipedia:

the senses should be split, and i'm pretty sure that "newborn baby" should come 2nd, and might warrant an "arch". i don't think i've never seen this used outside of 水子地蔵 or 水子供養

Current Entry価格協定 [かかくきょうてい] /(n) price agreement/ (1719010)
Headword 1価格協定
Reading 1かかくきょうてい

English 1price agreement
CommentIn "legal reality" is there any difference between:
1) 価格協定 【かかくきょうてい】 (n) price agreement

2) 闇価格協定 【やみかかくきょうてい】 (n) illegal price-fixing agreement

By US business standards "price fixing" is without qualification "illegal". "Price agreement" sure sounds a lot like the Japanese Enron-style of business. All things considered, is "price agreement" which I think says nothing at all better than "price fixing". And yes I know that 協定 means a kind of "friendly settlement" of a problem. Any thoughts from the business sector here?

CommentWhen I query in English "price fixing", I get 闇価格協定 【やみかかくきょうてい】 (n) illegal price-fixing agreement The addition of 闇 suggests that the "pricing agreement" is illegal (under the table). However, I think that 価格操作 might be a bit clearer and more to the point of (illegal) price fixing/manipulation.
