Current Entry相対 [あいたい] /(n,vs) confrontation/facing/between ourselves/no third party/tete-a-tete/(P)/ (1401100)
Headword 1相対
Reading 1あいたい
Part-of-speechn,vs
English 1confrontation
English 2facing
English 3between ourselves
English 4no third party
English 5tete-a-tete
CommentOK, Now I'm upset! Please look at the following:

1) 相対 【あいたい】 (n,vs) confrontation; facing; between ourselves; no third party; tete-a-tete; (P)

2) 相対 【そうたい】 (n,vs) relative

You will note, first of all, that both are the same except for the readings and the ascribed meanings. What upsets me is that #2 which means "relative" is the one WITHOUT the P marker. Actually I think both deserve them and I am fully prepared to generate heaps of words with the そうたい component. Viva La Einstein!

Editorial Comment Difficult to get quantitative data on this, but 相対 is quite common, and even if the usage is split 70:30, it is still used enough for both to get P.

Headword 1不当たり
Reading 1ふあたり
Part-of-speechn
English 1failure
English 2unpopularity
CommentThis definitions given stray from what I always call "the core etymological meaning" which in this case is "fail to hit" such that I have heard this used in conjunction with a "kabu-shiki gaisha" that I solely owned in Kansai. The stock was held by me and hence said to be "fu-atari". You will note that none of the above "spurious" renderings make sense here. As a rule, then, Always Trust the Latin and Greek root words in English or in Japanese the Kanji components.

Editorial Comment The major dictionaries bomb out on this, apart from 広辞宛, which has:
興行物などが、人気を呼ばず不入りなこと。
時流にうまく乗らないこと。はやらないこと。
That seems to back up the current JMdict/EDICT gloss.
BTW, I am VERY cautious about glossing a word on the basis of the "core meanings" of the kanji. I'd end up saying that 魂柱 was a post supporting a soul.

ReferenceIn the American English dub of Inuyasha, episode 88 at 01.01.35, the character doing narration uses the term "archenemy" to describe the bad guy. It will also appear on p. 6, frame 1 of volume 30 of the Animanga published in America
CommentJust a bit of nuance, but sounds more natural to me that the existing "old enemy" entry for 宿敵. This translation has already been accepted by the publisher, a subsidiary of Shogakugan Publishing.

CommentI really don't like this ばがいとりひき kana reading. It should be じょうがい.... and not ばがい in the interest of consistency and to be in agreement with other dictionaries that I have consulted. If one does prefer the ばがい reading, then let's have it reflected in 場 【ば】 (n) (1) place; (2) field (physics); (P) So That there would be both readings listed, i.e. ば and じょう as in, for example, 一場 【いちじょう】 (n) one time (place).

Agreed. It appears to be a duplicate entry:

場外取引 【じょうがいとりひき】 (n) over-the-counter trading
場外取引 【ばがいとりひき】 (n) over-the-counter trading (transactions); OTC trading

I did a quick check of the submissions log, and didn't find it, so I guess it's an old error.

CommentIn the context of the passage which I was reading, I belive that it is the name of a book. 先哲 appears in your reference, as does 伝, but I cannot find 像 as a suffix to 先哲 nor as a prefix to 伝.
