English 2 | sweetheart |

Comment | This tale is set in Okinawa. Because of the presence of US military bases, locals
seem to be much acquainted with English language, and probably they adopted many words in their daily language. |

Headword 1 | 裏日本 |
Reading 1 | うらにっぽん |
Reading 2 | うらにほん |
Part-of-speech | n |
English 1 | (sens) Japan Sea coastal areas |
Comment | Although I never heard this one, the meaning is discernable by even the least discerning. What is usually/always used is 日本海. Why do I point up the obvious? Well, lest one read the mind of the "wordsmith" the English query of "Japan sea" produces nothing, only "Sea of Japan" results in 日本海 as a result. Although I know Edict is "intended" for those enquiring in Japanese exclusively, I believe this is a rather myopic approach and that our "database", if indeed it be that, be updated to accommodate "word-specific queries" and therefore not limited to "word-order specific" queries. Therefore both "sea + Japan" and "Japan + sea" should, as is SOP nowadays, yield 日本海.
== This word is very common and not synonymous with 日本海. As the construction suggests, 日本海 = a sea. 裏日本 = a part of Japan proper. |

Comment | In popular usage, this words refers to any kind of breakfast cereal, and not just flake-shaped ones made of corn.
Also, the form with -ス at the end is rare--only 854 hits in Google (excluding "コーンフレークス劇団") and might be considered an aberration, especially since inflections (like the plural -s) are normally lost in the adaptation of English words into Japanese. |

Reading 1 | ふられる |
Part-of-speech | v1,vi |
English 1 | (See 振る) to be given the cold shoulder |
English 2 | to be jilted |
English 3 | to be rejected |
Reference | Don't ask me why, but when rejected by a girl the Japanese appear to use 「フラれた…」. Hence the new headword.
The Anthy IME agrees with this usage, suggesting it even before 降られる and 振られる, and Google too agrees, giving me 200.000 Googits for フラれる and another 400.000 Googits worth of angsty, melancholic rejected lovers with フラれた. |
Comment | A friend in my hiking circle got rejected by the girl he was dating and used this word in the circle's logbook. One man's rejection is another man's dictionary entry I suppose.
The headword フラれる might be (col). |
