It's generally used (at least in manga, anime, games) by practitioners of martial arts to scold and (figuratively) wake-up students. (e.g. after they've said or done something stupid). Looking at the Google hits it seems to also be used more widely to refer to both general shouted reproofs and figurative ones. (c.f. 上司の“仕事に戻れ!”の喝で昏睡状態から目覚める, やりたい放題の学内ネットワークに「喝!」, ...) Comment | Following up on your comments, I noted that in Roy Andrew Miller's Reader (at 39(7)) it states that the き ending in the case of 濃き[こき] is the literary adjective equivalent (in noun-modifying position) of 濃い[こい]. This lines up with your comments and references so now I am not so sure about 'comparative day' but still that seems to be a logical combination of 若く[しく]and 日 even if not so usual or obvious. I trust that I have modified the above correctly. Many thanks for that redirection for my thinking. |
