Comment | Despite the dictionary entry giving only (2), all examples (with the possible example of one) are for sense (1). Doubtless they didn't consider (1) a compound worth mentioning specifically. |

Comment | Looking at the dictionary entries, I don't see any mention of 'encouraging'. While having 喝! shouted at you might be 'encouraging' in some sense of the word (as in "encouraging you to get your act together") I think that it is likely to cause confusion with the whole かつを入れる business. |

Headword 2 | 喝を入れる |
Reading 1 | かつをいれる |

English 2 | (2) to breathe life into |
English 3 | to stimulate |
English 4 | to encourage someone |
English 5 | to give someone a pep talk |
English 6 | (3) (See 喝) to shout the word 'katsu' in order to scold or reprimand (esp. in Zen) |
English 7 | to scold |
Comment | > Do you have a specific recommendation?
It looks like the recent entry for 喝 may possibly have been affected by the confusion in usage. If we consider 喝 to be a word shouted to scold, the you get something like (3) above However then the (iK) only applies to sense (1) and (2), not (3). |
