Looking at the dictionary entries, I don't see any mention of 'encouraging'. While having 喝！ shouted at you might be 'encouraging' in some sense of the word (as in "encouraging you to get your act together") I think that it is likely to cause confusion with the whole かつを入れる business. == kojien: 大声を出すこと。大声で叱ること。特に、禅宗で***励まし叱る***ときの叫び声。また、大声でおどすこと。 daijirin: 禅宗で、指導者が修行者を叱ったり***導いたりする***手段として大声を出すこと。また、その際に言う語。 meikyo: 禅宗で、誤った考えや迷いをしかり、また***励ます***ときに発する大きな語。 shinmeikai says 励ます only, as i recall. i think the line between "scolding" and "encouraging" tends to be blurry in zen. see for example: 警策 【けいさく】 (n) warning stick (Rinzai Zen); encouragement stick (Soto Zen) |
