New Entries/Amendments for 2008-07-02

These are the submissions received via the WWW forms for this day. I (Jim Breen) will annotate the submission if I think it needs to be amended or rejected or if I have a question about it. Otherwise it can be assumed that it has been accepted. You can see how it will look in EDICT by looking at the "diffs" file for this day or the next in the diffs directory.
Annotations completed: 5 July.
Current Entry喝 [かつ] /(int) (1) exclamation used to scold or encourage practitioners (in Zen)/(n) (2) scolding or threatening with a shout/ (2395840)
Headword 1
Reading 1かつ
Part-of-speechint
English 1(1) exclamation used to scold or encourage practitioners (in Zen)
English 2(n) (2) scolding or threatening with a shout
CommentPaul:

Looking at the dictionary entries, I don't see any mention of 'encouraging'. While having 喝! shouted at you might be 'encouraging' in some sense of the word (as in "encouraging you to get your act together") I think that it is likely to cause confusion with the whole かつを入れる business.

==

shinmeikai says 励ます only, as i recall.

i think the line between "scolding" and "encouraging" tends to be blurry in zen. see for example:
警策 【けいさく】 (n) warning stick (Rinzai Zen); encouragement stick (Soto Zen)

Commentthe vast majority of (sens) tags come from NHKs broadcasting guidelines.

if you google for 放送禁止用語, you'll usually find the list pretty easily. like this one:
http://monoroch.net/gallery/kinshi/

this word isn't flat-out banned but may be "best avoided according to context". it has the note:
最初に据える灸は皮膚を切るような痛みを感じることから。包茎手術の意はないが卑俗に感じる場合もある

and incidentally, "circumcision" is EXACTLY what i thought this word meant the first time i saw it

CommentA definition of "Ginjousake" is given here as "吟醸酒。。。米の外側60%以上削るなど、手をかけて、ていねいに醸造した酒。" - isn't this saying that "the grain's exterior has been milled away to at least 60 not that the feedstock is composed of 60illed rice? I feel the definition given here has transposed this somehow, but I apologise if I am mistaken.
