Part-of-speech | v1,vi |
English 1 | (1) to be smashed |
English 2 | (2) to become useless |
English 3 | to cease functioning |
English 4 | (3) to go bankrupt |
Comment | I am definitely not a reader/writer of Japanese so please don't trust my judgment there. It seems that 潰れる is a Uk (usually written in kana form only). I can understand why as a speaker/comprehender of the language this might be true. There is just no way to confuse it with anything else, especially given the rather predictable context it is used in. Along those lines there are two related and very common entries missing: kao wo tsubusu; kao ga tsubureru (flip sides of the same coin and used extensively in Japan)
Yep, I know about the New Entry form - just no time for all the fill-ins. |

Editorial Comment | Eijiro certainly has つぶれる as the far more common form, as does GG5, but simple WWW hits have 潰れる leading 2:1. I'll make it uk. We already have 顔を潰される, and I'll add 顔を潰す. 顔が潰れる doesn't seem that common. |

Headword 1 | 破産 |
Reading 1 | はさん |
Part-of-speech | n,vs |
English 1 | (personal) bankruptcy |
Comment | Although I am very, very inclined to agree with the rendering as is and as related to the individual and not the corporation. What I can't then "rationalize" is the attendant entry of: 破産会社 【はさんかいしゃ】 (n) bankrupt company
For what it's worth I have always used 倒産, though I must admit people looked at me a bit in amusement when I applied 倒産 to people - and not companies. So is 破産会社 misplaced or mistaken? |
Name | Dennis |

Editorial Comment |
I'm thinking the "(personal)" is misplaced. I see passages like:
- 破産した銀行 - 会社は破産の一歩手前だ - 裁判所がその会社の破産を宣告した 破産会社 is appearing in very official texts, e.g. on the MOJ website. |

Headword 1 | 途 |
Reading 1 | と |
Part-of-speech | n |
English 1 | way |
Reference | ALC does not have an example sentence for 途 alone.
Sanseido only has it in combination with 〜にある and 〜につく. Google gives a lot of compound words, and a lot of literary titles, but not much in the sense of normal usage. A lot of the references uses set phrases like 帰国への途 |
Comment | Should this really be a (P)?
I can imagine individual kanji from often used words amassing a huge score in the (P) algorithm due to their presence in those compound nouns. |
Name | Jeroen Hoek |

Editorial Comment | I suspect the P too. It's from the newspaper ranking, and it is weakish with single kanji. I'm adding 途につく. |

Editorial Comment | Hmmm. 等式/とうしき is an entry meaning mathematical equality. I think it is correct. 等色/とうしょく means isochromatic. I'll add it. 等色/とうしき only appears in Bhudddic, and I won't challenge Chuck Muller on it. |

Comment | Should the (P) really be on both readings considering the above? |
Name | Jeroen Hoek |

Comment | As suggested by the SpaceALC results on 'wasp' (and confirmed by a native speaker) Japanese do not consider 'wasp' as clearly separate to 'bee' as English speakers do and 蜂 can be used to mean either. |
