Referencehttp://dictionary.goo.ne.jp/search.php?MT=国語&kind=jn
Comment(1) and (2) are technically probably the same sense. It's just that when a Japanese person is speaking, or being spoken about, 国語 = (their) national language = Japanese. Well, it may be a fine distinction but I can live with it.

Incidentally, I would consider swapping (1) and (2). I'm sure that (2) is more common 'in the wild'.

Also if (4) is an (abbr), what is it an (abbr) of? I put in a (See 国語科), but really I would be tempted to merge it in with (2). (After all 英語 isn't separated into "English" and "English (as a school subject)").

CommentSometimes conversion would not be appropriate. The example that I had was to "count the annual paper consumption in terms of telephone books". In that case, you cannot use the any of the other meanings. Plus, "count something in terms of something else" also expresses the literal meaning of the term in Japanese. It's really close to the 大辞林 definition.
