Comment | I refer to Paul's comment that: most of the Google hits are actually for the conjunctive verb form (equiv. of 〜て) (or 交換しあいしょう etc.).
Paul added that he was not sure it adds that much to the dictionary when we have 交換 and し合う already.
As for me, I would only like to say that the small trigger to understanding for the beginner is provided by such an entry. It is the same with 話し合い. If it appears in the written text with the あい in kanji form [合い], then it is easy to work out the meaning. However, in my various references, even just looking up はなしあい will get one definitively to 話し合い and the English meaning. However, just looking up こうかんしあい does not help as there is no head word to match, however, the expression appears a great deal in Google and elsewhere. I appreciate the point made by Paul and I can imagine that it is always difficult when choosing to put something in or leave it out [especially, when one describes the database as a dictionary]. However, it is the trivia that often defeats the beginner like myself. I turn to your site to find words and expression which I cannot find whilst trying to read some text with the aid of the dictionary. It is great when I enter a search and the result is a match. This match, together with comprehensive meanings; and readings; and other references are really helpful. It is a big stumbling block when at the time of trying to read some text one stumbles on the simple things which are always obvious to the one who knows [Why can't we remember what it was like when, as a child, we did not comprehend something which seemed apparently obvious to the adult? Why when we cross the barrier of understanding on any matter do we become blind to the struggle we had to get to the side of understanding; save only that we carry forward the general hardships of progress?]. I suppose it is always a matter of policy for the generator of any database; the generator has to clearly identify the target-user and satisfy that user's need. If beginners are part of that target, then I can only say that the inclusion of こうかんしあい would have left me well informed at the time that I was reading the line of text in the book which I was reading. However, it was not included. Nevertheless, by making the submission, although my reading of the text was stalled, my understanding of the expression is now firmly riveted in my mind. So either way, I am now quite happy. Hopefully, another beginner will feel good if he or she needs help on that expression and turns to your site and finds it [if, of course, the expressions remains!] In any event, many thanks for a great site. It is easy to see from the submissions that a dedicated band of people work ceaselessly to further the understanding of the Japanese Language. |
