New Entries/Amendments for 2008-08-15

These are the submissions received via the WWW forms for this day. I (Jim Breen) will annotate the submission if I think it needs to be amended or rejected or if I have a question about it. Otherwise it can be assumed that it has been accepted. You can see how it will look in EDICT by looking at the "diffs" file for this day or the next in the diffs directory.
Annotations completed: 15 August.
Headword 1輪っぱ
Headword 2ワッパ
Reading 1わっぱ
Part-of-speechn
English 11: (Slang) circular obento box; 2: ring-shaped
English 21: handcuffs; 2: to handcuff (with the verb はめる or かける)
ReferenceDoing a quick search on Google for ワッパ or 輪っぱ with the verbs はめる or かける should net sufficent hits to verify the validity of the word. Please note that the katakana usage seems to be more common than the kanji/hiragana.

CommentThis was originally suggestion as a revision in 2007 by Paul Blay, but it was declined claiming it was "to marginal" to add. This isn't true. It's true that輪っぱをかける doesn't net many hits on google, but that really shouldn't be a cause the decline a submission. 輪っぱ is often written in katakana like ワッパ and can also take the verb はめる. I've heard it used on a number of occasions in Japanese criminal series and it seems to be quite a frequently used word for handcuffs and with the verb はめる or かける an expression that means "to handcuff"

Editorial Comment Well, to quote the dialogue then:
PB: May also be used as slang for handcuffs (31 hits for ワッパをかける that fit that usage). That's pretty marginal though.
JB: Yes, probably too marginal to add.
That's not exactly a suggestion or rejection.

WWWJDIC entry for 損なう.
Comment読み損う should be marked (io) just as 読み損う as per WWWJDIC.
読み損なう should be the first headword instead of 読み損う as per Google.

Although, in this case you might want to consider just dropping 読み損う as a headword, none of the other 〜〜損なう compound verbs do.

English 1to misread

Comment> Googits comparison between 読み損なう and 読み損う.
> (respectively 100.000s versus 1000s)

There are not 1000s of hits for 読み損う. If you look at actual number of non-duplicate pages returned for +"読み損う"
there are only 44.

Similarly there are not 100,000s for 読み損なう

+"読み損なう" 206 'real' Google hits

The 読み損なう entry as a whole is thus only of very marginal utility, but if it is to be kept then 1:4 is a better reason for keeping 読み損う then 1:1000 would have been.

Headword 1靴一足

CommentWhen I searched for くつ一足, which was the reading in the text of my book, no entry was fount[but it did say make a submission]. When I checked on 一足 to confirm the second part of the reading, the above entry was found. I wondered if there was a search angle which did not match or whether くつ一足 is entirely a different thing from 靴一足. The actual context was this: 貧しい者をくつ一足で買取り.

Editorial Comment I've added くつ一足 to the 靴一足 entry. No, there is no particular search angle that can make くつ一足 match 靴一足 or くついっそく.
