Comment | With regard to my submission for 大いに力, and without wishing to seem patronizing in any way, I have to say that it is a real pleasure to witness the open peer review taking place on your site. When I read things in text books (not just in Japanese where I am a novice, but also in areas where I have some understanding of the subject matter), I often wonder about the correctness of what is said. On your site, the value of just knowing that there are people out there who are constantly monitoring and commenting upon the entries provides much confidence to the questioning novice. These contributions from experts and Editorial Comments like 'Fair enough' adds a balance of high technology and a human touch. There is a danger that your site could be addictive and I may have to ration my time to avoid becoming hooked.
Returning to the entry, and following on from Paul's reasoning, I am wondering whether 大いに喜ぶ should now be deleted or whether the appropriate entry for 力 in this context should be 大いに力む [おおいにりきむ]. |

Comment | > Returning to the entry, and following on from Paul's
> reasoning, I am wondering whether 大いに喜ぶ should now > be deleted The major difference between these two cases is that 喜ぶ is a verb and so is directly linked to the adverbial phrase 大いに. > or whether the appropriate entry for 力 in this context > should be 大いに力む [おおいにりきむ]. That would pass the "unit of speech" test (or however it should be described) but there are only 12 Google hits for the the phrase so I don't think it's that useful ;-) 大いに喜ぶ has 10,700 Google hits. Not too special, but not insignificant. I would consider that marginal if I was considering submitting 大いに喜ぶ as a new phrase - because it's not a very 'interesting' phrase. If phrases are inherently difficult to understand, idiomatic or unusual in some way they may well be worth having in a dictionary. Phrases may also be worth having if they are just very often used (even if otherwise uninteresting). I seem to recall there were some proposed guidelines written somewhere on adding (exp) entries to Edict (possibly even by me) but I can't remember where (could have been in the jmdict mailinglist) |

Comment | One of the example sentences clearly uses sense 2.
Interestingly, 大辞林's entry for 長じる just tells you to see 長ずる. EDICT doesn't have the latter at all, but then neither does the Sanseido J-E. I leave it to somebody else to decide whether a new EDICT entry is warranted. |
