New Entries/Amendments for 2008-08-28

These are the submissions received via the WWW forms for this day. I (Jim Breen) will annotate the submission if I think it needs to be amended or rejected or if I have a question about it. Otherwise it can be assumed that it has been accepted. You can see how it will look in EDICT by looking at the "diffs" file for this day or the next in the diffs directory.
Annotations completed: 28 Aug.
Current Entry苗字(P);名字(P) [みょうじ] /(n) surname/family name/(P)/ (1604730)
Headword 1苗字
Headword 2名字
Reading 1みょうじ
Part-of-speechn
English 1surname
English 2family name
CommentAs per my offering to the Group, 名字 should be linked and grouped with 名前 as very commonly occuring. In "practical" usage, 名前 universally stands for "name", with 名字 being more specific but a bit pedantic/noisome in conversation. Point being, the corpus is chaotic.

Headword 1苗字
Headword 2名字
Reading 1みょうじ
Part-of-speechn

Comment苗字 does not appear to be the preferred reading elsewhere. Although 名字 seems to be more "popular", I prefer it because it's more readable and consistent with 名前.

Editorial Comment I not that in WWW hits 苗字 outranks 名字. Dictionaries tend to have 名字 eith first, or alone.

CommentOK there are a bunch of issued with this entry. First and foremost that that 養護 and 擁護 do _not_ belong in the same entry. This is the 擁護 entry.

CommentI think I might consider dropping the "storey" rendering. Why? I plowed through 30 pages of ALC and didn't find anything other than the "layer, stratum" usage. Although I didn't find the "sheaf (math)" usage either, I feel I am a better person for now knowing what "sheaf" means in math.

Editorial Comment The "storey" sense is in other dictionaries, e.g. GG5. I wouldn't drop a sense because it didn't make it into Eijiro.

Current Entry配置 [はいち] /(n,vs) arrangement (of resources)/disposition/(P)/ (1473150)
Headword 1配置
Reading 1はいち
Part-of-speechn,vs
English 1arrangement (of resources)
English 2disposition
CommentI really don't like any of these renderings, even by looking at the kanji alone. Especially "disposition" which is too easily confused with an individual's personality or "disposition". How about: leaving alone "arrangement (of resources)", which I think is good enough to at least limp along on its shaky legs and then replacing "disposition" with "configuration; layout". The intended meaning of "disposition" here is well beyond the comprehension of the young people in my country at least.

Editorial Comment I don't think "configuration; layout" is that accurate. I'm adding: deployment/stationing/posting.

CommentI cannot argue the logical possibility that 副見出し exists (after all we have a fuku + everything). However, for "subtitle", and we need to clarify what we mean by subtitle:
1) Subheading: 副題, maybe 小見出し, the of which I read as a "small headline" in a newspaper;
2) Subtitle to a movie: 字幕
Note: the above have been ripped from the bowels of Yahoo and Space/ALC -- and are not my creations.
