New Entries/Amendments for 2008-08-30

These are the submissions received via the WWW forms for this day. I (Jim Breen) will annotate the submission if I think it needs to be amended or rejected or if I have a question about it. Otherwise it can be assumed that it has been accepted. You can see how it will look in EDICT by looking at the "diffs" file for this day or the next in the diffs directory.
Annotations completed: 30 Aug.

Current Entry長ずる [ちょうずる] /(vz,vi) (see 長じる) to grow/to grow up/(2) to be good at/to excel in/
Headword 1長ずる
Reading 1ちょうずる
Part-of-speechvz,vi
English 1(1) (See 長じる) to grow
English 2to grow up
English 3(2) to be good at
English 4to excel in
CommentCapital 'S' in '(See xyzzy)' seems to be the standard used in other entries. (I'm guessing that the lack of capitalisation is why WWWJDIC hasn't hyperlinked 長じる ?)

This entry also had a (2) but no (1). I've added that, but should the "(See )" reference be before the (1)? -- it seems to me to apply to both senses. [If it should be before, similar comment applies to 長じる's (See ) marking.]

Editorial Comment See/see work the same. At present the 長ずる entry is in a holding file waiting to move into the database (I do this about once per month.) The text "(see xxx)" gets converted to (effectively) "xxx" during that process, then when the regular EDICT file is generated, the gets turned into "(See xxx)".
Sense numbers are a bit the same. During the database conversion the "(1)"is dropped and "(2)", "(3)", etc. are changed to new_sense tags. In the EDICT generation the senses come out (1), (2), etc. There's no problem leaving the (1) off the version in the holding file (but I've put it in to stop confusing people.
The relative location of the fields in the interim entry isn't important. It gets fixed up when it goes into the database.

Current Entry七味 [しちみ] /(n) (1) seven delicious flavors (flavours)/(2) (See 七味唐辛子) (abbr) lend of seven spices (cayenne, sesame, Japanese pepper, citrus peel, etc.)/shichimi/ (1880850)

CommentFix typo in sense 2 ("blend" was missing a 'b').

Editorial Comment Ah thanks. When there is no indication inthe Comment as to the amendment, I have to do visual comparison of the old and the new. Sometimes people send in "amendments" with nothing actually changed, which is a bit frustrating.

Comment> for 支配的地位, GG5 has "being in control/being in the saddle".

Are you sure GG5 doesn't have something like "to be in control/to be in the saddle" for "支配的地位*にいる*" ?

As seen in Eijiro the 'in' and 'be' aren't part of 地位 itself, but are from the phrase in which it is used.
