New Entries/Amendments for 2008-09-01

These are the submissions received via the WWW forms for this day. I (Jim Breen) will annotate the submission if I think it needs to be amended or rejected or if I have a question about it. Otherwise it can be assumed that it has been accepted. You can see how it will look in EDICT by looking at the "diffs" file for this day or the next in the diffs directory.
Annotations completed: 1 Sep.
Current Entry復習 [ふくしゅう] /(n,vs) review/revision/(P)/ (1500800)
Headword 1復習
Reading 1ふくしゅう
Part-of-speechn,vs
English 1review
English 2revision
CommentOne thing that I do is "link" -- as easily confused homophones -- two or more P word entries, ie 復讐(P); 復しゅう; 復讎 【ふくしゅう】 (n,vs) revenge ---- with 復習.
My feeling is that I need not do so for a P word and a non-P,low-frequency word. I remember with embarrassment in the early days confusing the two "jishin" in a conversation. Fortunately the college students at the gesshuku were most forgiving and told me the difference. Anyway, just a suggestion - that is not hard to implement.

Editorial Comment I'm not sure drawing attention to homophones is such a good idea in a dictionary. OK in teaching guides, etc. Any other views on this?

Current Entry詩的破格 [してきはかく] /(n) poetic license/ (2046430)
Headword 1詩的破格
Reading 1してきはかく
Part-of-speechn
English 1poetic license
CommentAlthough I think 詩的破格 is quite a good choice, it is also a bit Eng-Jpn chokuyaku; such that I can see an argument made for 詩的許容, which I prefer because of the inherent feeling of "toleration" in the permission granted. Disagreement with this suggestion is welcomed.
NameDennis
Submission Typeamend
Editorial Comment I'll go along with it. 詩的破格 is in GG5, but it only gets 6 Googits. 詩的破格 gets many more, including some containing "poetic license" as well.

Editorial Comment We already have 凜/りん marked as "adv-to". Is there a special reason for having the -と form expanded? (We don't usually.)

Current Entry詩的破格 [してきはかく] /(n) poetic license/ (2046430)
Headword 1詩的破格
Reading 1してきはかく
Part-of-speechn
English 1poetic license
CommentNot Yahoo, Goo or Space/ALC approve of 詩的破格, though Yahoo and ALC like 詩的許容. I think the 詩的破格 entry should be dropped, especially because it sounds so eigo-kusai. But that's just an opinion from someone whose "literature vocabulary" is anemic, at best.

Current Entry様みろ [ざまみろ] /(exp) You'll get what you deserve!/ (1545810)
Headword 1様みろ
Reading 1ざまみろ
Part-of-speechexp
English 1You'll get what you deserve!
Comment1) I have only heard this used after the fact - to mean, "See, you got what you deserved" in kind of an "I told you so fashion".
2) Question: Why is the expression not written 様見ろ as in the entry 様を見ろ, which I have never heard.
Note: Since I learned many of these expressions "on the fly" and not via a dictionary, I cannot speak with certainty; it's just that 様見ろ seems more like what is burned into my mind.
NameDennis
Submission Typeamend
Editorial Comment According to WWW hits, 様見ろ is marginally more common. I'm aligning the meaning with 様を見ろ and cross-referencing.

Headword 1
Headword 2
Reading 1すみ
Reading 2すま
Part-of-speechn,n-suf
English 1corner
English 2nook

Commentis it worth specifying that すみ specifically means the interior, enclosed part of a corner or does "nook" cover it?

also all dictionaries have the headword 角 and the archaic-ish looking reading すま(= 隅 only), and i think "recess" might be useful here too
NameRene Malenfant

Editorial Comment I think "nook" covers it.

Despite the above dictionary link I think it was probably invented to match "poetic license" and there's little, if any, evidence it is actually used.
