Unfortunately many untalented English - Japanese translators tend to miss the difference in meanings and use "common sense" as a direct equivalent both ways, but I'm not sure how to resolve this problem in a short dictionary entry. The problem is really how to translate "common sense" into Japanese, rather than how to translate 常識 into English, so perhaps this is a problem for an English to Japanese dictionary, rather than a Japanese to English one.
Joushiki is also used to mean "general knowledge" in the sense of a "general knowledge quiz" - "joushiku kuizu", as in the reference above, and many more easily available via Google searches. |
