Sorry for my poor Japanese skills. Admittedly I didn't do any research on this one. I was thinking "strike" meant "appear". What's the correct meaning of さす?(in this context; 差す says "to raise" or "to wear a sword", 射す/shine makes sense with 影)

Still think some literal translation should be provided. Or how about an explanation. ー> "when gossiping about someone, the person will appear at that exact moment"

How do you discriminate "real" Google hits? When I search for "噂をすれば影がさす" there are about 1,000 results.

CommentI think the submitter above was another person confused by the "User-submitted entry, awaiting verification" message.

Perhaps "awaiting incorporation into permanent database", etc. would be a better message, since the "verification" process is usually done within a mere day of submission, but it then sits there for a month or so before being added to edict proper.

When you search for something in Google you get a hit estimate shown:

Results 1 - 10 of about 1,350 for "噂をすれば影がさす"

However it _always_ over-estimates. It is possible to tell how many pages (indexed by Google) actually contain the search phrase as long as that number is less than 1,000. Because Google only returns the first 1,000 page hits.

CommentI was searching the site for a meaning of the above and I was prompted to make a submission. Taking another route, I deleted the か and looked up 何物 and I discovered that was present in the data with a meaning of 'something' or 'nothing (with neg.)' so then I wondered whether the か was simply 'or'. The context of my text was this: この人、何か物を落として拾う. This text I am now taking to mean: This person picks up and drops something or other. There are lots of Google hits and I am wondering whether such an expression should be included. Should it have been included already, I would have been pleased to discover it and get on with my reading with a little more certainty.
