New Entries/Amendments for 2008-09-13

These are the submissions received via the WWW forms for this day. I (Jim Breen) will annotate the submission if I think it needs to be amended or rejected or if I have a question about it. Otherwise it can be assumed that it has been accepted. You can see how it will look in EDICT by looking at the "diffs" file for this day or the next in the diffs directory.

Current Entry貸与権 [たいよけん] /(n) lending rights (for copyrighted works)/ (1983630)
Headword 1貸与権
Reading 1たいよけん
Part-of-speechn
English 1lending rights (for copyrighted works)
CommentNot a suggestion so much as a request for clarification. The translation of "lending rights" is indeed direct. However, the parenthetical qualifier "(for copyrighted works)" baffles me. I can only find this usage alluded to in an example from ALC "# 出版業界の団体が、CDやビデオと同じ貸与権を出版物にも要求していくことを発表しました。
A publishing industry group has announced it will request the same rental rights as those for CDs and videotapes.全文を表示する" From the reference to 全文を表示する there is merely allusion to a proposed law whereby rental fees for CD, DVD, etc. are partially paid to artists. I don't recall hearing of such a law actually in effect. Sorry for the lengthy missive.

Editorial Comment As I understand it, the term 貸与権 is specific to Japanese copyright law. GG5 has: "貸与権 【法】 〔1984 年の著作権法改正で認められた権利〕 (a) lending right."

Current Entry明細 [めいさい] /(adj-na,n) (1) details/obvious/(n) (2) (See 明細書) (abbr) detailed statement/(P)/ (1532440)
Headword 1明細
Reading 1めいさい
Part-of-speechadj-na,n
English 1(1) details
English 2obvious
English 3(n) (2) (See 明細書) (abbr) detailed statement
CommentI would like to see "obvious" deleted as a rendering, since it renders very little. In place I would suggest: "details; particulars" as per Yahoo and Goo. Such a rendering is thereby comprehensible even to dullards, such as I.

Current Entry偽善者 [ぎぜんしゃ] /(n) hypocrite/fox in a lamb's skin/ (1224570)
Headword 1偽善者
Reading 1ぎぜんしゃ
Part-of-speechn
English 1hypocrite
English 2fox in a lamb's skin
Comment"fox in a lamb's skin" is certainly comprehensible as is. What we say in the US is "a wolf in sheep's clothing", which arguably makes even less sense. My point is that neither of these expressions really represents a 偽善者. Probably, then, a deletion of this saying of dubious origin is recommendable.

Current Entry著書名 [ちょしょめい] /(n) author/ (1638820)
Headword 1著書名
Reading 1ちょしょめい
Part-of-speechn
English 1author
CommentWhat struck me as odd about this entry was its kanji, which does not yield itself to "author" but more to "title of a book; title of a literary work" (more exact). As you know, I am a bit of a literalist and tend to rely heavily on the word's kanji etymology. I think this entry is best deleted, another reason being I don't find it anywhere, nor anywhere meaning "author".
NameDennis
Submission Typeamend
Editorial Comment Yes, "author" is quite wrong.

Current Entry集 [しゅう] /(n) collection/(P)/ (1956400)
Headword 1

Part-of-speechn
English 1collection
CommentThe guy who complains about minutia would like to know if a rule, when we eventually have a database, should be applied to principal word components, ie a link to the basic verb or noun they represent, in this case 集まる. (A repeat of my group post)
NameDennis
Submission Typeamend
Editorial Comment I have changed the POS to "n-suf". I don't think 集 is used solo. e.g. "集が....". I don't think the suggested linkages are appropriate (and it's nothing to do with databases.)

Headword 1燔祭
Reading 1はんさい
Part-of-speechn
English 1burnt offering
English 2holocaust (only in the original meaning, i.e. religious animal sacrifice)
CommentThis is in rerference to Paul's correction of my amendment suggestion:
The current entry is potentially misleading since in common (English) usage the word "holocaust" has assumed a different meaning (and even in the original meaning this term is only used by specialists, thus i was confused by the entry and thought it was wrong - ergo, an explanatory comment would be most helpful)

Editorial Comment Better to drop "holocaust" from the glosses, as it simply misleads.

Editorial Comment OK, but the French is only relevent if the Japanese word derives from it, which in this case it doesn't.

Headword 1赤外線

ReferenceI'm not sure this is correct. First, there's already an entry for sekigaisen and this is the only pronunciation in gg5. And the only meaning in gg5 is infrared. Alc has infrared too and also "ultrared". Ultraviolet seems to be 紫外線 according to alc. So, I think this should be deleted or investigated further.

See below.
CommentI am not wholly certain about the above because references to the above readings are also found in names. However, in general text, where the kanji is used on its own and definitely does not refer to a person, I wondered what the reading should be, e.g., クン for 勲; or コウ or ク for 功; or the readings above. I referred to your site and got make a submission. I referred to Nelson and the readings were clear enough, but....
However, if there is no reason why the readings should not be included, then perhaps they should be included.
I wonder if I should have made a separate submission for each kanji above, but it the submission fails for this submission, then it would fail for both.
