Comment | I have read your comments and also the amendment-comments by Rene Malenfant. It is interesting to hear these observations; especially the one about Nelson.
I am not sure about the various linkings between different databases, but I have been doing some more searching around. I have not had much success for 躑 and しゃがむ beyond Nelson; save that your own kanji search throws up the following:- 躑 6D36 [7722:e755] U8e91 B157 S22 N4594 V5920 MN37963 MP10.0963 P1-7-15 I7d14.1 Q6712.7 Yzhi2 Wcheog テキ しゃが.む たちもとお.る squat; sit on heels; loiter. As you will see, しゃが.む is present in connection with this odd kanji. Anyway, I hope that is of some use, but it all goes to demonstrate that language is no science. |

I can't find an entry for it in any of the usual suspects. Google isn't much help either. And what is a "quiet window" anyway? |

Headword 1 | 何か物 |
Reading 1 | なにかもの |
Part-of-speech | exp |
English 1 | a thing or what |
English 2 | something or other |
English 3 | TempSUB |
Comment | I'm pretty sure this just means "something". Some examples of this in use from other JEs:
手に何か黒い物を持っていた He had something black in his hand. 何か(暖かい)飲み物が欲しい I want something (hot) to drink. I'm not sure this really needs an entry at all. I think this is just an example of the normal use of 何か and these are two completely individual words. "何かいいこと" gets far more hits than "何か物". (And do you get the feeling that is 何か acting almost adverbially in these sentences? That would mean that it's not actually acting on the noun 物 and they should be kept apart.) If this is kept, "something or other", "something" or "anything" do seem like fitting translations. |

# 神は言った。「私に勝てるわけがないだろう。有名選手は皆天国にいるのだ。」 [T] "How can you win, Satan?" asked God. "All the famous ballplayers are up here." # 彼には日常必需品すらない、まして贅沢品はあるわけがない。 [T] He has no daily necessities, much less luxuries. # 割当て金は僅かなものだ。体育館を建てるにも足らないだろう。ましてや、本部を建てるのに、足りるわけがない。 [T] The appropriation is pin-money; it wouldn't be enough even to build a gym, much less build the administration building. # 私より年上のわけが無い。 [T] He cannot be older than I. |

Comment | Z.さん had suggested "chest of drawers (for western-style clothes in particular)" and reasoned as follows: "in America we don't put clothes in a cupboard". I am sure that harldy anybody puts clothes into a cupboard - in my world people use wardrobes for that.:-) About "not hanging clothes": in Germany and some other countries people use large (height can be up to 2m) "boxes" with doors to _hang_ clothes in (German: "Kleiderschrank"). Since a "tansu" is definitely not a "chest of drawers" but in appearance and function close to a German "Kleiderschrank", i recommend "wardrobe" (if free-standing) or "closet" (if built in) for "tansu".

Comment | Sorry, don't know how to give feedback other than by using the entry form, thus the dummy entry.
On September 11 someone had submitted the name of the architect "Arata Isozaki" and added the following comment: (quote) It fails if there is a space in the kana fields and says there is a kanji there. To be completely accurate the failure message should mention that there is a "non kana" entry, not a "kanji entry". (unquote) To which Jim had replied as follows: (quote) The messages say: "the proposed entry has non-Japanese character(s) in one of the kanji fields." or "the proposed entry has non-Japanese character(s) in one of the kana fields". No mention of "kanji entry" AFAICT.(unquote) Unfortunately i have more than once (and not long ago) encountered that same error message the submitter complains about! :-) |

The "kanji entry" mystifies me. The word "entry" only occurs in the
program that processes the form in the following strings:
- the proposed entry has non-Japanese character(s) in one of the kanji fields. - the proposed entry has non-Japanese character(s) in one of the kana fields. - the proposed entry has kanji in one of the kana fields. - the proposed entry has a kanji headword, but no kana fields. - the proposed entry does not have any characters in the headword and/or kana fields. - the proposed entry does not have any characters in the English fields. - the proposed entry does not have an email address. Check the submissions WWW page for feedback. |
