Comment | t seems clear that -化 has a concept of -ize, but in the context of the text which I was reading [正典化への複雑な歩み] it seemed to make some sense but....
Could it be a meaning like 'complicated walking in the direction of canonization', I wondered; and I turned to your site for assistance because other references to hand did not assist. Naturally I found 正典on your site, but I was left with making a submission for 正典化. I appreciate that 化 can be added to almost anything so it may seem unnecessary to include it, but again, for the novice, every bit of help is valuable in the process of seeking confirmation of the meaning. For all of us, seeking a definitive meaning in any language is not really a good prospect, but the clear value of every possible aid in every step in the process of leaning cannot be measured by the needs of those who have mastered the trivia. In this context, the recent contribution by Dennis which got the comment 'I'm not sure drawing attention to homophones is such a good idea in a dictionary. OK in teaching guides, etc. Any other views on this?' is perhaps another example. The plight of the beginner is awesome. The public exposure of ignorance. The barrier which must be crossed time and time again. As it happens, I believe that you are right about homophones because context is everything in language. Even with the sound of words which have only one clear meaning, one spelling and hopefully only one sound, the novice is still saying, 'Excuse me, could you please say that again. Perhaps, you will write it down for me .... Ah, yes, now I understand.' Such things are bound to be extremely difficult in the dynamic flow of conversation, but in the more basic world of spelling and meaning [the dictionary], there is much that can be done to aid the novice. I know that you know this already so I am sorry to rabbit on. I do so only to support what you are trying to do and to confirm the value to me of all the hard work that goes into maintaining your site. Although there are lots of times when I am asked to make a submission, you never get to know about all the times when I find what I am looking for without any more ado. |

Comment | Main dish as in main dish.
Main side dish in relation to ご飯 that is the 主食 and can be considered as the main one too. Don't know how to define it nicely in English, so I leave it up to the natives. References to 前菜 and 主食 would be nice. Maybe メインディッシュ too. |
