New Entries/Amendments for 2008-09-29

These are the submissions received via the WWW forms for this day. I (Jim Breen) will annotate the submission if I think it needs to be amended or rejected or if I have a question about it. Otherwise it can be assumed that it has been accepted. You can see how it will look in EDICT by looking at the "diffs" file for this day or the next in the diffs directory.

Current Entry良くも悪くも [よくもわるくも] /(exp) regardless of right or wrong/regardless of merit/both good and bad/ (2409800)
Headword 1良くも悪くも

Part-of-speechexp
English 1regardless of right or wrong
English 2regardless of merit
English 3both good and bad
Comment"for better or for worse" "良くも悪くも" 46 'real' Google hits
"for better or worse" "良くも悪くも" 45
"both good and bad" "良くも悪くも" 7 (incl. 2 from Edict)
"rightly or wrongly" "良くも悪くも" 3
"regardless of right or wrong" "良くも悪くも" 2 (both Edict)
"regardless of merit" "良くも悪くも" 2 (both Edict)

I think it makes sense to gloss this commonly used Japanese phrase with a commonly used English phrase, one that sounds natural in the contexts in which it's used. "regardless of right or wrong" is just clumsy.

Their (attempt) to benefit by raising a ruckus is, I think, due to the failures of post-WWII education.

Headword 1探光用
Reading 1たんこうよう
Part-of-speechn
English 1search light
English 2use as a beam of light
ReferenceSee below.
CommentI was reading the following: 写真にある探光用に穿たれた天窓から差し込んでいるものです。
The author seemed to be describing a beam of light which shone like a searchlight into a dark corridor from a skylight above. I cannot find much else to refer to.
A actual searchlight is, I understand,'探照灯' in Japanese, so it cannot be that, but...
Because the author is a scholarly fellow, I assume that it is not a typo. In which case, even if there is not much on Google to support it, I would have found a definitive reading and meaning in your database helpful.

Editorial Comment It appears to be a Chinese term that gets used occasionally in Japanese. I won't keep it.
