Comment | I was searching to see if I could find a special meaning for this much used combination [over 300,000 according to the Google head note]. The combination seems to be based on 'if, providing, etc.' together with 'if it exists'; at least, that seems to be right on the basis of my references.
For the beginner, it would be good to discover either that there is some special meaning for the combination or, in the alternative, that there is not. However, as noted previously, the absence of anything at all in the references to hand [save for the meaning of the individual parts] simply leaves a lingering doubt, namely: that one day the beginner will discover the special meaning which was so obvious to the experienced speaker of Japanese that the experts did not think that it was even worth a mention. |

Comment | With reference to my preceding entry concerning もしあれば, the above is a good example of what I mean. The beginner sees 'そういった' in the text. そういう can be found in the reference works to hand, but not そういった. Could it be 'someone or something walked in a particular way'; perhaps it could be 'someone said so'; perhaps 'something is named in this way'; perhaps ....
The uncertainty lingers on until one day the meaning, in context, is understood. However, a quick check on your site would have given that beginner the essential clue that the words do have a particular meaning as a combination; and moreover that the words are not simply brought together as two entirely separate words, each carrying their own particular meaning. However, I suppose that I am asking for a little more, namely: that where there is habitually two or more common, plain, and simple words brought together in normal text, that they are in general shown; together with a note which states that they simply mean what they say in individual words. The main bulk of words are sufficiently obvious in meaning [at least, if one knows where they begin and end in the japanese text] that a diligent search of a reference tool will generally give all the necessary information even for the beginner. It is always the little words and their habitual combinations which plague the development of the beginner. I apologize for this long preamble for a simple 'Thank you' for the inclusion of 'そういった'. The joy of discovering the meaning of trivia seems to be out of all proportion to the totality of all your work in creating such a comprehensive dictionary and research tool, but it is the trivia of the world that seems to hold all else in place. |

Comment | (1) in Multi-radical kanji, the "Limit to Jouyou/Jinmeiyou kanji" does not seem to work. For example check "父" and it will return only 3 of the 7 jouyou kanji that contain this element. (2) I am aware of this problem so it does not concern me, but it may be problematic for other users. Please understand that I make these comments for the benefit of wwwjdic and not for my own pleasure. (3)I use the same heading as a submission from last week since this is a related problem. That time is was told to "RTM". Rest assured that I did and can find no mention of either problem in the User Guide. (4) Again, as last time, I qualify my comments with the admission that I may be in error. |

Thanks for the bug report. Yes, WWWJDIC was falling over on the
常用/人名用漢字 filter in that function. Fixed now.
Re last week's "RTM", you asked about a "G9" kanji not being 常用. In KANJIDIC G9 & G10 = 人名用漢字. 常用漢字 are G1-G6 and G8. |

Comment | しんけん can be used as an adjective meaning "serious" or "earnest." It should not be "seriousness" or "earnestness" because these are nouns. This is confirmed with the Canon Wordtank G55. |
