Headword 1 | 今終える |
Reading 1 | いまおえる |
Part-of-speech | exp |
English 1 | finished at this point |
Reference | See below. |
Comment | In the absence of confirmation from my usual sources, I am taking the above reading of '今' to be compatible with '終える'. The context was this: 今終えたばかりだ. This, I understand means something like, 'I have just finished it'.
Your site is the equivalent of the Japanese language master sitting alongside as one studies at home. It would have been good to get the instant confirmation from the search which I has just made preceding this submission. Every time one fails to find the answer in a hard copy reference book to hand, usually the first step whilst reading, and one has to wonder about the reading of some text, the result is an unnecessary diversion of the mind. I appreciate that this is all part of the difference between the meaning of words and their usage and the purpose of the reference tool. However, this concept was comfortably accommodated in the 20 volume OED to a great extent, but most ordinary people neither had the space nor the money to have that at their side. It is one of the odd things in life, the scholars have all the small detail to hand because they live in the great libraries or have their own personal libraries, whereas the ordinary casual learner, who really needs so much of the etail, has the abridged Collins Gem tucked away on the shelf. With great sites like yours we can all have the equivalent of the great OED at the touch of the keyboard. |

Editorial Comment | I don't think 今終える can really be regarded as a self-contained expression. I think it's really a regular juxtaposition of words. |

Comment | Dear Jim,
I hope I did it well this time. I tried to "Suggest" an ammend (I noticed you changed the button's name) and inserted to entry translations in Spanish. But I put the Spanish words under "English 1" and "English 2". Is it where they are supposed to go? |

Editorial Comment | Yes, you did it right. In case this is a mystery to others, what is happening is that Roger is using a new feature that allows existing EDICT, etc. entries to be used as templates for entries for the Spanish, French, etc. dictionary files. The "selected" against the "Language" tag tells the program that processes these submissions to divert the entry. |

Comment | i'm pretty sure this is one of those cases where it was written コフ, but
pronounced コウ. kojien says: こく‐ふ【国府】 (コクブ・コフとも) but that's only for the archaic sense, and it doesn't have an entry for こふ, only こう こ‐う【国府】 also, this refers to chiang kai-shek's gov't, not to the current |
