Current Entry同志社 [どうししゃ] /(?) ???/RH/
Headword 1同志社
Reading 1どうししゃ
Part-of-speech?
English 1???
English 2RH
ReferenceSee below.
CommentI was searching for 社 in the string of "同志社大学". I could understand the first two kanji and the last two, but not the relevance of the middle one in that context.
Now, of course, I can see that the first three kanji represent a name.
I am wondering whether this RH entry should be deleted, because the name is covered in the other entries as below:-

同志社女子大学 【どうししゃじょしだいがく】 Doushisha Women's University (p); NA.
同志社前駅 【どうししゃまええき】 Doushishamae Station (st); NA.
同志社大 【どうししゃだい】 Doshisha Univ. (n,Loc); LS.
同志社大学 【どうししゃだいがく】 Doshisha University (n,Loc); LS.
同志社大学 【どうししゃだいがく】 Doushisha University (p); NA.

It is strange what one discovers searching around, for example: this university was founded by Neesima in 1875. As a young samurai, at the age of 21, he stowed away on a ship bound for America to realize his dream of a Western education. It is said that in 1864, it was illegal for Japanese citizens to travel abroad, and if he were caught, Neesima would have had to pay for his dream with his life. He is said to have been the first Japanese citizen to obtain an academic degree overseas. He returned to Japan and in 1875 he founded Doshisha Eigakko. He was convinced of the necessity of establishing an institution of higher learning that was based on the Western ideals and Christian moral teachings.
This seems interesting in 2008: the 150th anniversary of the 1858 opening of diplomatic relations between Japan and the UK. This young samurai was clearly part of the strange steps which turn out to have a lasting influence. Common knowledge, no doubt, to observers of Japan, but rather new to me; and rather revealing in the context of the samurai.

Editorial Comment Fair enough. I have knocked that out of the RH entries.

Headword 1年生まれ

English 1born in ... year
English 2established in ... year
English 3originated in ... year
ReferenceSee below.
CommentWhen reading a text with regard to the founding of a university, it stated: "1870 年生まれの比較的若い".
I was trying to confirm the reading of '年' in that combination. My reading above is, therefore, tentative.
The following entry appears on your site:-
年生 【ねんせい】 (n) pupil in ... year; student in ... year; (P).
Perhaps my submission should also appear.

Editorial Comment I think "年生まれ" is the conjunction of nnnn年 and 生まれ, and should not be treated as a free-standing expression. My inclination is not tohave it as an entry, but I would appreciate the views of others.
