Headword 1 | より普遍 |
Reading 1 | よりふへん |
Part-of-speech | exp |
English 1 | select universally |
Reference | See below. |
Comment | There are many expressions in your data which start off with the prefix 'より'. A while ago it took me some time to work out that such a prefix was related to 'selection' and the kanji '選り'. However, it is obvious once one has found out. That is after being previously plagued by the other wide range of meanings for 'より'.
If you feel unable to include the above, then perhaps you will consider having 'より' as an entry on its own and described as a prefix meaning selection of the 'thing' meant by the kanji added on. The text which I was reading was this: 'より普遍的な設計にせざるをえなかった結果です. [I take the meaning as something like this 'it is a result where (the architect) was made to select [could not resist selecting] the universal plan.] Everything else appears on your site except the above submission. |

Editorial Comment | I think this is just the common "more" sense of より, as in the current より entry. I can't see a case for より普遍 as a special entry. |

Comment | i don't really think this is related to より普遍 in your example (you should run a check for a kana-only より) which is another regular juxtaposition of words.
See http://www.jgram.org/pages/viewOne.php?tagE=yori-2 the より entry might be able to do with a revamp to make the meaning more clear |

Comment | With reference to your comment that ' "年生まれ" is the conjunction of nnnn年 and 生まれ, and should not be treated as a free-standing expression.' again, I find myself feeling that your are correct, but ....
However, that you should ask for the views of others regarding the inclusion, is interesting because it raises a doubt about the defined borderline between inclusion and exclusion. I think that if I were master of your site, I would always end up pressing the 'yes' button so that I could move on without more thought on the matter. However, I realize that there would be some dangers in my approach. In the context of your request for the views of others, I offer the following comments. The odd thing is this: I often come to your site in a mode of uncertainty and, when I have found what I want, I simply return to whatever I was doing previously without much more thought. However, when I cannot find what I want and I get 'make a submission', I usually try to do some more research. By the time I have finished that research, I am often reasonably satisfied that I have got the answer. Nevertheless, I still decide to make a submission because someone else may be looking for the same expression and its meaning. Moreover, the big added advantage for me in making the submission is that I often see some extra valuable comments from yourself or your colleagues; which comments help to clarify my thinking even more. After that point, I would not search again for that particular expression unless the meaning had slipped my memory. The above identifies what I can imagine is an inevitable difficulty with the development of such an important work like you are undertaking. At one end, it is driven by the dedicated few experts; and, at the other end, it is driven by people who really need help at the earlier stages of their studies. Without both extremes, the site would tend to stagnate because the middle band of people in any walk of life are generally too passive to contribute to anything of a developing nature. In fact, for the full exploitation of users of your site, especially the exploitation of the extreme ends of those who search your site, and especially the bottom end, I think that I would have an additional note on the search result page of your site which stated, "If your search request does not come up, please click on 'this' box."/ and "If your search does not come up, but you are able to give references for usual meanings and current volumes of usage, please click on 'this [i.e., the present]' box." That would separate the expert from the novice so that the expert contributions could go straight to the data, subject to awaiting your verification; and the click by the novice would generate a basket of failed searches would could be looked at as and when the time of your experts permitted. As for me, sometimes, I feel that I would rather click on 'the novice box' and have my failure recorded just in case it may help, rather than have to choose between making a submission based on prior expert knowledge about the thing I was searching for [i.e., the irreconcilable concept about why would one search to find something which one already possesses]; or just moving on elsewhere to another search tool in the hopes of finding an answer. As for '年生まれ', I should have found an explanation like 'nnnn年 and 生まれ, e.g., 2008ねんうまれ, etc., extremely valuable had I seen it upon my first search. As for now, I now know for certain what it means so I am all right, whether or not it stays in. Thus, the point of my rambling on in the above text. |

this division of senses makes more sense and is closer to what the other waeis have. (prt) and (adv) senses should be split (a la koj, daij, etc.) the new sense 4 is the one being used in より普遍 |

Comment | i find this one pretty borderline. eijiro has
_年生まれの子供 child born in __ personally, since 〜年(ねん) can't be used by itself, i don't think it should be included. the 〜年 in 1980年生まれ is much more a part of 1980 than it is 生 まれ, so i don't really find think this is a cohesive "expression" as such besides, there are example sentences that demonstrate the usage of this 私は1960年生まれだ。 [T] I was born in 1960. example sentences are the best way to handle this, imo |
