Comment | I wonder if the above is a good example in connection with the case for including '年生まれ [ねんうまれ]'.
I was seeking confirmation of this string of kanji: '朝時代'. I wanted both reading and meaning. Your site revealed the following entries for that search:- 王朝時代 【おうちょうじだい】 (n) (See 武家時代) Dynastic period (the Nara period and esp. the Heian period, characterized by the rule of the emperor as opposed to shogunate). 魏晋南北朝時代 【ぎしんなんぼくちょうじだい】 (n) Wei, Jin, and Southern and Northern Dynasties period (220-589 CE). 南北朝時代 【なんぼくちょうじだい】 (n) period of the northern and southern dynasties (in China, 5th-6th c. CE in Japan, 1336-92). 吉野朝時代 【よしのちょうじだい】 (n) (See 南北朝時代) (obsc) Yoshino period (Japan's Northern and Southern Courts period, esp. from the viewpoint of the legitimacy of the Southern Court, 1336-1392 CE). So, I found what I was looking for. The means of discovery was by searching with a combination of a suffix kanji (without a noun to which it is normally attached), together with the two kanji with their own particular meaning as a discrete combination. Now that I have seen your entries, I wondered why I needed to search in the first place because it now seems quite obvious. The text which I was reading was this: '十六世紀、エリザベス朝時代の建築様式です'. "Ah! what a numskull I am, it it obvious," I thought. I guess that the text means something like: 'It is a 16th century building in the style of the Elizabethan period'. Of course, in my defence, I worked my way searching forward from エリザベス and searching back from 朝時代 in various reference books, but I did not find the answer; except, as explained above, when I entered '朝時代' on your site. If other users find, like me, that the brain seems fairly sluggish at times during the learning stage, then perhaps these sorts of combinations could be included in the form of a suffix as additional help. That could help the process of discovery, e.g., - 朝時代 and - 年生まれ. |

As you discovered, it's エリザベス朝 + 時代. That 朝 (ちょう) is a suffix
meaning dynasty/reign/period/court. I have an aversion to including
"expressions" which start with dangling suffixes.
I'd like to raise this issue in the mailing list. |

Comment | Referring back to the recent comments on this submission, I do not believe that the normal meanings for 'より' seem to be applicable because this 'より' follows the subject marker, thus: 彼がより普遍的な設計にせざるをえなかった結果です.
I have done some further research and in Shokakukan it shows several entries with the prefix 'より[選り]' and in each case is refers elsewhere to the reading 'えり[選り]'. The prefix is given the meaning 'choose-', 'select-', etc. In the context of the original text it seems reasonably clear that the meaning is this: 'He [the architect], was obliged to select the universal plan [i.e., the normal plan for such a scheme].' |

Comment | Reading your notes about this, I am wondering about the kanji basis, namely: 有って無い, because there did not seem to be any reference anywhere for that in any of my reference books. I originally thought that 'あってない' was based on '有って無い' and that it would mean something like, 'it not existing', but when I accessed your site and got the concept of ’合ってない’and the notion of 'something not fitting' in opposition to '合っている' and 'something fitting', I thought that seemed to 'fit' quite well.
Anyway, because the entry always seems to be used without the kanji, I wondered whether the headword should be 'あってない' as opposed '有って無い'. |

GG5: "あってない【有って無い】"
EDICT, JMdict, etc. don't have "the headword" in the way a traditional dictionary has. Instead there are indexable kanji fields (zero, one or more) and reading fields (at least one). Where a word/phrase/etc. is usually written in kana (as is the case with あってない), it gets a "uk" (usually kana) tag. |

Comment | Referring back to the recent comments on this submission, I do not believe
that the normal meanings for 'より' seem to be applicable because this 'より' follows the subject marker, thus: 彼がより普遍的な設計にせざるをえなかった結 果です. == It doesn't matter. It's an adverb. Adverbs can come after particles. より普遍的な = more universal 彼がより普遍的な設計にせざるをえなかった結果です. Resulting in him having [had] to select a more universal plan. The "select" in this sentence is coming from 〜にする (the base of 〜にせざるを えない) not from より. |

Comment | if you see the original amendment:
http://www.csse.monash.edu.au/~jwb/dicsubs/2008-03/subs2008-03- 03.html it appears that this has been slightly botched from what i suggested (senses 5 & 7 being confused), and the ever-important "to select" sense (which was listed as sense 6) has been omitted |

Comment | Actually, I don't know the context, but thinking about it,
彼がより普遍的な設計にせざるをえなかった結果です. could mean something like "A result wherein he had to choose a more universal plan", like I suggested above, but this seems more likely: "[This is] the result of him having had to choose a more universal plan." |
