I shall be very interested in seeing what comes out of your intention to raise this issue in the mailing list. Although I understand your aversion, I do find myself wondering, many, many times, about both the meaning and the reading of the standard suffixes which follow such a mass of things like Kings and Queens, Lords and State Ministers, ships and heavy machines, etc., etc.. In English, the spelling is the simple clue to the meaning, but when faced by the name of a person, followed, by '卿',is the reading 'けい' or 'きょう'; is it a suffix to the name; or is it the prefix to the kanji which follow? It is fair enough to say that after spending time searching one place and then another that the answer will be found in due course and, then, further search becomes unnecessary because once the barrier of understanding has been crossed, the answer is known; albeit, it is not necessarily the case in Japanese that an alternative reading may not sometimes be more customary for a particular case. I suppose that it all depends upon one's objectives, for example: the beginner looking for instant clarification with the minimum of effort [not always best in the long run] and the provider of the answers trying to serve a wide-user base [not even possible to define, unless restricted by some form of entry qualification]. The outcome of your experts on the mailing list will be awaited with much interest. |
