New Entries/Amendments for 2008-10-30

These are the submissions received via the WWW forms for this day. I (Jim Breen) will annotate the submission if I think it needs to be amended or rejected or if I have a question about it. Otherwise it can be assumed that it has been accepted. You can see how it will look in EDICT by looking at the "diffs" file for this day or the next in the diffs directory.
Annotations completed: 30 Oct.
Current Entry自ずと [おのずと] /(adv) naturally/ (2007530)
Headword 1自ずと
Reading 1おのずと
Part-of-speechadv
English 1naturally
ReferenceSee below.
CommentI have not made an amendment to the above because I have taken note of your previous comments about Nelson.

However, Nelson [4900] gives the reading as いの.ずと. Nelson gives the alternative reading as おのずか.ら.

Before altering the Nelson entry, I just thought that I would raise the query, just in case いの.ずと is a recognized alternative reading.

Editorial Comment No reference apart from Nelson has "いの.ずと".

Headword 1限り難しい
Reading 1かぎりむずかしい
Part-of-speechexp
English 1(something) is difficult to restrict
ReferenceSee below.
CommentThe actual text was this: 事情がない限り難しい、という結論へと至るわけです。

There seems to be many Google hits, but it is difficult to tell quite how many because the hit is often '....限り、難しい....’

Editorial Comment These verb-stem + 難しい/安い constructions are very common.

Current Entry語訳 [ごやく] /(?) ???/RH/
Headword 1語訳
Reading 1ごやく
Part-of-speech?
English 1???
English 2RH
ReferenceSee below.
CommentI am wondering if this entry is a typo because I can find '誤訳' and '語釈', but not the above.

The following entries follow on after the above:-
語訳 【ごやく】 (?) ???; RH [G][GI][S][A]
英語訳 【えいごやく】 (?) ???; RH [G][GI][S][A]
英語訳 【えいごやく】 (n) English version; English translation [G][GI][S][A]
外国語訳 【がいこくごやく】 (?) ???; RH [G][GI][S][A]
現代語訳 【げんだいごやく】 (?) ???; RH [G][GI][S][A]
口語訳 【こうごやく】 (n) colloquial translation [G][GI][S][A][W]
逐語訳 【ちくごやく】 (n,vs) literal translation [G][GI][S][A]
日本語訳 【にほんごやく】 (n) (See 和訳) Japanese translation [G][GI][S][A][W]
仏語訳 【ふつごやく】 (?) ???; RH [G][GI][S][A]
文語訳 【ぶんごやく】 (?) ???; RH [G][GI][S][A]
日本語訳語 【にほんごやくご】 (?) ???; RH [G][GI][S][A]
語訳聖書 【ごやくせいしょ】 (?) ???; RH [G][GI][S][A]

Where the '語' is the suffix to the preceding character(s), that is understood [and, indeed, this is a case where the entry could also be dealt with as a hanging suffix, if that was the way you chose to go]. However, where the entry is neither marked as a hanging suffix nor related to anything, it does seems, from my searching, that it is not a standard prefix to '訳'.

The text which I was reading was this:-
「学寮」語訳により近い存在で

I wondered if this was a typo because I tried, in quite a few places, to find the kanji combination of '語訳', but I could not. I turned to your site and got the above.

Could it possibly be that my quoted text was something like, '....it depended upon a translation of the language of the halls of residence (students).' However, that did not seem to fit the context, which I believe was about comparing the meaning of 「学寮」 in Japanese universities with 'halls of residence' in Cambridge.

I hope that is helpful.

Editorial Comment I think it's a fragment. Bear in mind the revhenkan file is from IME data.

Editorial Comment The duplication check isn't applied until the updates are formally added to the database. I catch some others earlier, just by eyeballing. Thanks for pointing this one out.

CommentThe EoS explains that it has many derivatives. I paste in:
A variety of related terms exist, such as seibettō (head monk), gon-bettō (provisional monk), dai bettō (chief monk), shō bettō (junior monk), bettō dai (alternate monk), rusu bettō (monk who served during an absence of the bettō), and shūri bettō (monk in charge of repairs). Those associated with shrine duties who were not Buddhist priests were called zoku bettō.
