New Entries/Amendments for 2008-11-15

These are the submissions received via the WWW forms for this day. I (Jim Breen) will annotate the submission if I think it needs to be amended or rejected or if I have a question about it. Otherwise it can be assumed that it has been accepted. You can see how it will look in EDICT by looking at the "diffs" file for this day or the next in the diffs directory.
Annotations completed: 15 Nov.

Current Entry取って [とって] /(?) ???/RH/
Headword 1取って
Reading 1とって
Part-of-speech?
English 1???
English 2RH
ReferenceSee below.
CommentI have not amended the above because I think that you may wish to delete it, or perhaps make a cross-reference to: 取る. Further, I have not made amendments because when those potential options entered my mind, I thought that I may not make the correct amendments anyway.

I actually started off searching for 'にとっては', just in case there was a special meaning for 'にとって' with the addition of the 'は' , other than 'は' being a simple topic marker. Then, finding the submission request and checking the 'Combined Jpn-Eng ' I got a whole range of RH entries which seemed worthy of amendment, cross-referencing or deletion because they were covered in full elsewhere.

For example:-
取って置 【とってお】 (?) ???; RH
取っておき 【とっておき】 (?) ???; RH
取って代 【とってか】 (?) ???; RH
取って返 【とってかえ】 (?) ???; RH
取って返し 【とってかえし】 (?) ???; RH
取って代 【とってかわ】 (?) ???; RH
取って付 【とってつ】 (?) ???; RH

I trust that is useful.

Editorial Comment I have removed 取って from revhenkan. Not much use.

Current Entry始点 [してん] /(?) ???/RH/
Headword 1始点
Reading 1してん
Part-of-speech?

ReferenceSee below.
CommentI am wondering if the above should be deleted, see the following:-

始点 【してん】 starting point; initial point; WI1

Editorial Comment The usual process it that I periodically filter out revhenkan "entries" where they match JMdict/EDICT/ENAMDICT entries. 始点/してん is not in JMdict/EDICT yet. If you want it removed from revhenkan, "promote" it from the work-in-progress file.

Current Entry玄関口 [げんかんぐち] /(?) ???/RH/
Headword 1玄関口
Reading 1げんかんぐち
Part-of-speechn
English 1entrance door
English 2moon house door
ReferenceSee below.
CommentI think that the writer of the text which I have been reading likes to use the kanji '口' in the context or reservoirs and entrances, but he is not alone because Google appears to throw up nearly 1m hits.

I was searching to find the reading because I was not sure whether '口' would be read 'くち' or 'ぐち' or 'こう' or 'く'.

Perhaps if you amend the RH entry, I shall discover all the options.

Editorial Comment Where did you get "moon house door"? AFAIK げんかんぐち is the only reading.

Current Entry一軒 [ひとのき] /(?) ???/RH/
Headword 1一軒
Reading 1ひとのき
Part-of-speech?
English 1???
English 2RH
ReferenceSee below.
CommentI wonder if the above should be deleted.

See the following:-
一軒 【ひとのき】 (n) single eave; WI1
[Note. I believe that 'single eave' should be 'single eaves'.

Perhaps the following two RH entries could be completed at the same time. The first gets quite a lot of Google hits, and the second get about 1000.
一軒宿 【いっけんやど】 (?) ???; RH
一軒前 【いっけんまえ】 (?) ???; RH

Perhaps the first is 'a single lodging'.
Perhaps the second is 'in front of a house'

I trust these submissions are useful.

Editorial Comment See earlier comment about promoting "WI" entries. I need much better validation of meanings than "Perhaps the first is ...". See http://www.csse.monash.edu.au/~jwb/wwwnewwordexpl.html where it says: "Never guess. If you are not sure of the kanji, or the reading, or the English meaning, don't bother sending it. Incoming entries are all checked, and sending in a dud entry is just wasting time."

Headword 1古い家
Reading 1ふるいいえ
Part-of-speechexp
English 1old house
ReferenceSee below.
CommentThere are quite a few entries on your site where '古い' comes up as a prefix, e.g., old snow, old ice [no reading given].

I was searching in order to confirm the reading for '家'. Was it 'いえ' or 'うち' or 'ーや' or 'ーけ' or 'ーか'?

My guess was 'いえ' , but ... what is a guess worth in Japanese!

Editorial Comment I don't think this warrants an entry. 古い is a regular adjective, and there is nothing special about 古い + 家.

CommentYou could add the following expression !
現実、現物、現場
which a well used moto in the industry. Based on the Toyota principles, it states that to manage and solve any kind of situation or trouble, you must go to the real place of occurence, and repeat the really what occured, with the real goods that were involved - instead of sitting in an office and think over facts that were only reported.
