New Entries/Amendments for 2008-11-17

These are the submissions received via the WWW forms for this day. I (Jim Breen) will annotate the submission if I think it needs to be amended or rejected or if I have a question about it. Otherwise it can be assumed that it has been accepted. You can see how it will look in EDICT by looking at the "diffs" file for this day or the next in the diffs directory.

CommentWith regard to your comment about submissions, namely: if I want to remove an entry from revhenkan, I should "promote" it from the work-in-progress file.

I am not sure how to do that. I have checked your submission advice and I cannot find any pointer there and I cannot see a box above which lets me do that. Perhaps, I have not been diligent enough in my reading of the instructions.

I am sorry if I am a little dense on these things.

With regard to your other point about submissions generally, namely: if I am not sure then I should not send the entry. I can understand that, but in reality I am usually quite sure about what I am sending. However, when dealing with experts, it always seems to be wise to adopt a humble posture when making submissions, especially when making amendments to existing entries. The other factor of which I am conscious is that I am usually searching your site for things which are not in the reference books which I have beside me at the time of reading something, hence, there is potentially some doubt. However, before making a submission, I do tend to try to do more research if I cannot find it on your site as a main entry.

Anyway, I am anxious not to be a nuisance factor in the giant exercise of compiling your database so I shall head your comments carefully.

I trust that the above is an acceptable submission.

Editorial Comment See below for a demonstration I did of a promotion. My reference to not sending submissions was because you said you were guessing the readings. I do not want guessed readings. I ask for references, because without them I go and look it up myself, and unless it is coming from someone with a good demonstrated track record, a lack of refs means it will be dropped.

CommentIt seems to me that either the above entry should be deleted or, for the benefit of a novice, the above entry should be simply cross-referenced to the following:-

目の当たり; 目の辺り 【まのあたり】 (adv,n) in one's presence; face to face; on the spot; before one's eyes.

I cannot find 'め' used for '目' in this context, however, I am sure that 'め' would be the starting point of searching for the novice.

CommentWith regard to 'Where did you get "moon house door"? '.

When I was searching around, for example, on Google, there were several references to "moon house door" with '玄関口' in brackets so whilst I was amending the RH, I made reference to it.

The other associated reference was '月の家'. Hence, there was logic in the association.

Commenti don't think this phrase really suggests 'building character'. it's about adversity strengthening the foundations of something (i.e. an argument strengthening a friendship)

Here's an example sentence with a better translation:
いろいろトラブルもあったけど、雨降って地固まるってことになってほしいね。
We've been through a rough patch but I hope it will have made us stronger.[Amend]

Commenti'm not sure what to do with these.

there definitely needs to be an entry for 無/不{ぶ}

at present, there's:
無 【む】 (n) nothing; naught; nought; nil; zero
and
不 【ふ】 (n-pref) un-; non-; negative prefix [Ex][G][GI][S][A]

both of which need work.

it might be best to have:
無{む,ぶ} (with restrictions)
and
不{ふ,ぶ}

all the japanese dictionaries except for meikyo keep 無{ぶ} and 不{ぶ} apart, but daijirin and daijisen have *identical* entries for them.

i'll submit this as new along with some changes to む and ふ and then maybe see what's best

if there's a good way of mentioning it in a usage note, 無 usually indicates lack or absence of something, whereas 不 usually indicates that something is not in a particular state or not doing something

Reference広辞苑 第5版
CommentTranslation 1 may be a metaphorical interpretation of this saying based on the word "kamo" meaning "sucker" (騙されやすい人), but according to 広辞苑 the meaning of the saying is that of something (or someone) idoneous or optimum coming at the very right moment, as when a duck comes up with its own onion when you want to cook kamonegi-nabe. I would propose a more accurate translation, and leave the present one as translation 2.
