English 1???

ReferenceSee below.
CommentI wonder if the above should be deleted because it does not seem as though it can stand alone.

The reading 'ねほん' comes up in a place name, for example:-
秋根本 【あきねほん】 Akinehon (p); NA.

If, of course, the reading could potentially be a reading for just the two kanji, then perhaps is should be added to '根本(P); 根源(P); 根元(P); 根原 【こんげん(根源; 根元; 根原)(P); ねもと(根本; 根元)(P); こんぽん(根本)(P)】 (n) root; source; origin; foundation; base; principle; (P)' or, even '根本 【こんほん】 root; BU ', but the latter is unlikely, else it would have been there already.

English 1(See 釣り針) fishing hook
CommentWell needle and pin both sound straight, while "(fish)hook", obviously, always implies a curve at the end. 針 certainly is used to mean fish-hook (and I presume other hooks as well, and fish-hook is not naturally implied by the first two glosses to my mind.

==

In theory, though, *this* is the better entry for 'hook', or at least specifically for 'fishhook'.

I agree it's good to keep 'hook' in the other entry, but I think it's better (as I suggested) to use the blanket term 'hook', and put it in together in the same sense with 'needle' and 'pin' rather than given its own sense as 'fishhook'.

Here's Kojien's entry with the hook-relevant parts highlighted.

Daijirin and Daijisen don't have anything hook-related in the entry for 針 because they put that in the entry for 鉤, while Progressive Waei has 'hook' but lumps it in together with 'needle' and 'pin'.

CommentAlthough just 'hook' could be misleading. i.e. 針[はり] wouldn't refer to a pirate's 'hook' for a hand, or a 'hook' to hang something on your wall, etc.

It *could* refer to a piercing 'hook' used as a fastener though.
