New Entries/Amendments for 2008-11-28

These are the submissions received via the WWW forms for this day. I (Jim Breen) will annotate the submission if I think it needs to be amended or rejected or if I have a question about it. Otherwise it can be assumed that it has been accepted. You can see how it will look in EDICT by looking at the "diffs" file for this day or the next in the diffs directory.

きょうしや 狭視野 名詞
CommentNarrow-field (camera, etc.) is quite a common wording in English, but狭視野 seems to be pretty darn obscure.

Current Entry雑 [ぞう] /(?) ???/RH/
Headword 1
Reading 1ぞう
Part-of-speech?
English 1???
English 2RH
ReferenceSee below.
CommentWith regard to: 'What exactly did you do when you "clicked on '雑 【ぞう】'? I can't see any malfunction. ', I clicked the 'entry [with a dot in the box]' and then I clicked 'examine' and then the '板間静脈' range of kanji came up. I tried all of the ones noted and the same happened. I went out of the page and back again and tried again and the same thing happened. Hence the submission.

I have done the same today and it now works all right so I have no idea what happened.

As for my proposed entry, Rene has picked up the point and made the changes. See below:-
雑 【ぞう】 (n) miscellany (classification of Japanese poetry unrelated to the seasons or to love) (NB: User-submitted entry, awaiting verification)

I guess that the remaining RH entries, as follows, will be sorted out automatically.
雑 【ぞう】 (?) ???; RH
雑 【ま】 (?) ???; RH
雑 【まじ】 (?) ???; RH

Editorial Comment You hadn't mentioned you were using the "examone kanji" option. You can get odd results if you change dictionaries.

Current Entryソースティン・ヴェブレン /(n) Thorstein Veblen/WI1/
Headword 1ソースティン・ヴェブレン
Part-of-speechn
English 1Thorstein Veblen
English 2WI1
ReferenceSee below.
CommentI tried searching for 'ヴェブレン' and I got make a submission. When I searched for the whole name, I got the above.

I am wondering if the search recognition should be on either the family name or the given name.

The following additional details could be added: ソースティン・ヴェブレン(Thorstein Veblen,1857年7月30日 - 1929年8月3日)[That is according to Wikipedia].

Editorial Comment Usually I have such names as "ソースティンヴェブレン", but I agree there is a problem searching by surname alone.

Editorial Comment I don't think so. AFAICT 努力賞 is a prize, whereas an "honourable mention" is just getting your name on a list.

Current Entry星姿勢計 [せいしせいけい] /(n) (obsc) star map/TempSUB/
Headword 1星姿勢計
Reading 1せいしせいけい
Part-of-speechn
English 1(obsc) star tracker
English 2TempSUB
CommentShould this be "star tracker"?

The reference was:
http://www.isas.jaxa.jp/ISASnews/No.294/isas-hayabusa.html
この間,7月29日から30日,8月8日から9日,および12日に,搭載している星姿勢計(***スタートラッカ***)でイトカワを撮影しました。

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_tracker#Sensors
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hayabusa#Cruising

The example sentence (星姿勢計(スタートラッカ)でイトカワを撮影しました) suggests that 星姿勢計 is a device, and the dates in the example sentence correspond closely with the "star tracker" (スタートラッカ) stuff on the Hayabusa page.
