Comment | First, but nothing to do with the above, many thanks for your comments on '正本', 'そうなんですか', '再検証' and '外国人課'. I think that I have been coming from slightly the wrong angle. When I make a submission, you seem to be expecting me to act like a contributor to a publication, which contribution is naturally subject to editorial approval, so to speak. Whereas, I have been acting like the student in the classroom who tentatively [in attitude, but certain in mind] puts up his hand and suggests that the teacher has left out a comma in the sentence which has just been written on the blackboard; or that it may have been more helpful to students like me if the teacher had included a better explanation in his or her handout. Well, I shall try to be more like the contributor in the future. Again many thanks.
With regard to the above headword and your comment that 'Usually I have such names as "ソースティンヴェブレン", but I agree there is a problem searching by surname alone.', I have been wondering about that problem. Reflecting upon the difficulty of searching data and also the necessity for identifying a complete and logical string, I am wondering whether or not the problem could be solved by the use of very narrow spaces for the purpose of cheating the system. For example, if in the string 'ソースティン・ヴェブレン', one were to put a very narrow space before and after '・', the space would not show up as a space when reading the text, but the search would see it as a space and it would pick up the longest recognized string before the space and also the string after the space. I had a similar problem with strings which were divided up with '/'. However, when I put a very narrow space either side of '/', that allowed the formatting to take a logical shape, plus it allowed for a defined-string search of the text which was placed between the '/'....'/'. In condensing the space before and after '/', it could be condensed virtually to zero. Moreover, by using 'find and replace all' I was able to au omatically replace '/', in existing text, with ' / ' [the spaces, of course, being virtually non-existent]. I know that you are an expert on these matters so I hesitated before making the above observation. However, upon thinking about it carefully, I concluded that it was not a matter of expertize on computer matters. Rather, it was simply a case of one experience or another. In addition, I can readily accept that you, as the expert on these matters, may say that such a use of narrow spaces may work in word-processing and some databases but not necessarily on your own database. Anyway, it is submitted for what it is worth. |
