New Entries/Amendments for 2009-02-16

These are the submissions received via the WWW forms for this day. I (Jim Breen) will annotate the submission if I think it needs to be amended or rejected or if I have a question about it. Otherwise it can be assumed that it has been accepted. You can see how it will look in EDICT by looking at the "diffs" file for this day or the next in the diffs directory.

Headword 1代当主
Reading 1だいとうしゅ
Part-of-speechsuf
English 1used after a number to indicate that a person is the (e.g., the 14th) generation head of a family
Cross-reference(see 代), see(当主)
ReferenceSee below.
CommentThis has over 80,000 Google hits. It is, of course, only a suffix which can be worked out, but for the novice it is not that easy until it become obvious.

I am suggesting the inclusion based upon other examples in your data. For example, the inclusion of other entries which also become obvious once they are known; indeed, few people search a dictionary source for what they know already, that is generally the lot of the person who does not know or the compiler.

See for example: "代表電話番号" and its inclusion in the following:-

代 【だい】 (n,n-suf) (1) charge; cost; price; (2) generation; age; reign; (3) (geological) era; (4) (after someone's name or title) a representative of; on behalf of; for (someone); (5) (See 代表電話番号) used after a phone number to indicate that it is a switchboard number; (ctr) (6) counter for decades of ages, eras, etc.; (ctr) (7) counter for generations (of inheritors to a throne, etc.); (8) (See 代理申請会社) (abbr) proxy application company.

Perhaps my suggestion could be cross-referenced also from the entry for "代" in the same way as "代表電話番号".

Any novice faced with wanting to know the meaning of "代" and then referring to any reference source and discovering the range of meanings needs a little help; as indeed you have already provided by the cross-referencing already included.
