New Entries/Amendments for 2009-02-18

These are the submissions received via the WWW forms for this day. I (Jim Breen) will annotate the submission if I think it needs to be amended or rejected or if I have a question about it. Otherwise it can be assumed that it has been accepted. You can see how it will look in EDICT by looking at the "diffs" file for this day or the next in the diffs directory.
Annotations completed: 18 Feb.
Headword 1
Reading 1
Part-of-speechn
English 1limit on participation
ReferenceSee below.
CommentGoogle hits are well into the 10s of thousands.

It appears in text, often in the form of:-

With regard to "枠", the main meanings are centred around the concept of 'framework', 'frame', "box (in printing)", "a reel", "etc". All of these are indications of a limit. Hence, no doubt, the use in the sense of a limited participation. The Japan Society, in English and Japanese text in a handout, gives the equivalent as this: it may be possible for you to attend "space permitting" [The previous wording before that text says that there is a fixed number of seats available.]

This suggestions is compatible with similar guidance on your site for the novice who needs help in understanding combinations, which are obvious to the expert, but which baffle the beginner. See, for example, the following:-

参加希望者 【さんかきぼうしゃ】 (n) those interested in participating; persons wishing to participate

Incidentally, I wonder if "参加可能" should be classified as (n), as are the others, instead of (exp) which is the current classification.

Headword 1
Headword 2
Reading 1
Reading 2
Part-of-speechn
English 1(1) (see ぶちこむ) thrusting into, a put-down
English 2(2) (see ぶっこみづり) bottom fishing, legering
ReferenceThe previous submission has references for the fishing method. The first nuance is encountered in programs like London Hearts. I'm sorry I'm not able to give a better reference than that at this time.
CommentDaijirin equates the verb form bukkomu with tsukkomu, but when used in the first meaning it's IMHO not quite the same. Whereas tsukkomi can be seen as a light retort, bukkomi often feels vengeful and just mean. Thus "a put-down".

incidentally, take a look at the picture of 箙 in kojien, and at this one here:
http://www.k4.dion.ne.jp/~kasano/LOVELOG_IMG/96BD92DF8ADB_.jpg

that's not normally what comes to mind when you say 'quiver'. it looks more like a little box on strings that only sheathes the heads of the arrows. perhaps this entry needs some explanation
